My Experience on Evenity for Treating Osteoporosis

Posted by arlene7 @arlene7, Jul 7, 2020

Thought I would share for those considering or on Evenity for osteoporosis:
Afer much research and discussions with my GP and Cardiologist, I have decided to start my treatment with Evenity injections. As with all drugs, there are many side effects. My biggest concerns were stroke and heart attack. However, considering that I do no have any history for either, for me personally, the benefits outweigh the risks. As my GP said to me, "if everyone only thought about the side effects of the drugs, no one would be taking them".

I had my first injections (subcutaneously in the back of each arm) on June 30th. The nurse that administered the injections discussed the drug in depth, along with all the possibilities that may occur. She also mentioned that for all the patients that she has seen, none has had any side effects.

The injections are once a month for only one year, so I'm hoping that this works well for me and I can improve my bone density, especially in my spine, where I need it the most.

My endocronologist has also prescribed Hydrochlorthiazide for my idiopathic hypocalcemia. I have an appointment with an allergist this month to confirm whether I still have an allergy to sulfa drugs, since this drug contains sulfa. Apart from this I take D3 orally and try to obtain additional calcium through foods not supplements. Trying to walk 3-4 times a week and will begin with a few weight bearing exercises.

My journey began September, 2019 when I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. After waiting to see three doctors, receiving three denials from insurance company for Evenity, which took several months, I am hopefully on my way for a favorful outcome.

I just had my sixth injection of Evenity yesterday. No problems, but I was tired the rest of the day and slept good during the night. I am looking for positive outcome of taking this drug.

I think bone growth may cause pain, as in "growing pains." I wonder if the strong effects of Evenity cause that kind of pain. My doc prescribed Tymlos after discussion on Evenity, which is so new. Prolia is not a strong bone-builder but is a good med to prevent loss, according to my doc. You just have to be careful when you stop it and go on something else!

Hope you got some bone growth for your time on Evenity, @hsum4!

Thank you for sharing your story. I am right behind you in this. What is your t score in your spine? Just curious as mine is quite high and I need to decide between evenity and a faint injectable.

If you were referring your question to me, I don't know what my scores were. I had a Burst Compression Lumbar I Fracture and could not get surgery until my bones were stronger per my spine surgeon. He would not do the surgery. I will be at the two year mark and hope that I can get surgery to fix my problem after the Evenity shots.

How are you doing after treatments.
Hope all is well.

I just had my sixth shot of Evenity. After the shot, I usually get a little tired then by bedtime, I sleep pretty good. I am usually tired the week after but then feel good. I hope to be able to complete all 12 shots and then I will have that scan done again for bone density. Hopefully, the surgeon can do my surgery to fix my issue after I fell in my bathroom. I fell on my knees and broke my back bones.

Hello
I just finished my 6th injection. After my injections the last 2 months I have increased burning pain in my knees, and now hands and wrists. I have not had this before the injections. I also notice my hair seems to be thinning. I am active and walk at least 3 miles a day regardless of the knee pain. My doctor has 9 women on Evenity who have had no complaints of joint pain. I asked him if the joint pain would disappear at the end of the 12 months. He could not say and suggested I have a Rheumatologist consult. I would like to know if anyone who has completed their Evenity course had side effects and if they decreased at the end of the course.

I was told it is okay to do Forteo or Tymlos followed by Evenity but not the other way around, but I don't know if that is true. The reason may be that Evenity "turbocharges" (I remember that word being used) growth leaving less for the others to accomplish. But ask an MD!

I can report on results of taking Evenity for a year and a half.

DEXA scan results at lumbar spine are as follows:

After one year: BMD increased by 10.4% over baseline (before any treatment)

After one year and six months: BMD increased by an additional 10.3% for a total increase of 21.7% increase from baseline.

Both of my osteoporosis docs (see elsewhere this thread) felt that lumbar spine measurements are the significant measurements that accurately reflect the progress of treatment.

I plan to continue Evenity for the full two year course of treatment.

My current thinking is that I will then do the following:

Take risedronate oral (alendronate) for a period of time to be determined.

Do DEXA scans and bone marker tests at periodic intervals.

When bone markers return to a level that indicates that I can benefit, return to Evenity for another course of treatment.

I would be interested in thoughts, information or suggestions in regard to the above.

In a previous post, I provided information about a study of Evenity administered for two years. However, I cannot find that post. Please advise if I should re-post that information.

I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this information about my results... maybe it needs a new post. If yes, please let me know.

Thanks @arlene7 for giving this overview of your experience. I also want to link to the "companion" discussion here:
- Anyone taken Evenity (romosozumab) for Osteoporosis? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/evenity-osteoporosis/

I'd appreciate your returning to this discussion to provide an update as you continue to receive injections of the next year. Did you ultimately get approval from your insurance to cover this drug?

I posted a new comment on this thread today, but not sure if this is the correct place for what I posted. Please review my post -- if necessary relocate to a better location. Let me know if you do that, please.

The subject of my post was: results of taking Evenity for 18 months.
