Diet and autoimmune issues

Posted by margar1 @margar1, Jan 12, 2023

I need some guidance on altering my diet if necessary. I have 4 autoimmune conditions, and I’m getting worked up at Mayo for a 5th. Has anyone honestly had any benefit from a gluten free (GF) or non-dairy diet? I seem to be the poster child for stray autoimmune conditions and I would very much like it to stop. Thank you.

They said a Mediterranean diet is good for reducing inflammation, and said if I wanted to see if a GF diet would work then that was fine. I’m just torn about it given how hard it is to be GF.

Sweetie, you aren’t alone and autoimmune issues are so mainstream that we need to know there is Graves Disease and hyperthyroidism just as Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism. Two different animals: Hashimoto’s and Graves are AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES.

Not sure, flying blind, but am now 76, within past 5 years have been finally tested (ANA) and all my life I have ALWAYS felt THE POSTER CHILD, so I understand, I truly do. No idea your age but feel most all of you are younger…and sadly, so much has been late in being researched. And the tests, etc., are not perfect yet but for women…we are beginning to get the same level of care as the men.

Be proactive. Don’t be intimidated. Get second opinions. And there is now a genetic swab test that SHOULD tell each of us more about ourselves as individuals and what may have been the Gold Standard….is changing, slowly.

I’m curious- do you still have SIBO symptoms? Do you need anything else to control it?
Apparently, gluten sensitivity- celiac disease, autoimmune, often coexist with Hashimoto’s.
My 2 daughters both have celiac disease and one of them also Hashimoto’s. Both have food allergies too.

Hi, short answer is no to SIBO symptoms. But my Hypothyroidism started in my 40’s. I’m 71 now and my digestive issues started 6 years ago after a great deal of stress. Fast forward after another endoscopy and searching for a functional medicine doctor, I was put on a prebiotic and probiotic for a period of time and then omitted the prebiotic. But continue with the probiotic. I also worked with a nutritionist to reduce or eliminate some foods high in sugar, use stevia instead of sugar. And I continue also eating organic fruits and vegetables and grass fed meats, wild caught seafood, and grass fed dairy products. I also learned sheep’s milk yogurt is more digestible plus it also has probiotics. I think all these changes have been beneficial to the huge improvement to my health. Another addition I’ve incorporated into my weekly routine is infrared sauna or steam saunas - both good for inflammation.

I have autoimmune as well . I have given up sugar ( use stevia) . Improved
I went to a Dr who did all sorts of bloodwork. It came back highly allergic to all dairy. ( can have duck eggs ) I use vegan butter . Trader Joes
When I’m really vigilant with these changes and do kale / pineapple/ chia seed drinks I’m in good shape .

I was just diagnosed with RA In January My pointers were over the chart. Started me on methotrexate but he said I won’t feel any results from the meds until a few weeks. I knew my inflammation was getting worst so I did some research. Found out a plant base diet & no sugar reduces your inflammation. In a matter of less than 2,weeks after eliminating sugar & eating lots of plant base foods, I noticed a considerable difference. I can only tell you that I feel almost like myself with almost no pain. Will continue until until my next bloodwork & see my markers Good luck.
