Knee replacement

Posted by luvndasun @luvndasun, Nov 20, 2021

I had one replacement 6 months ago and me knee still feels like it's on fire 24/7 and I'm in pain all day and night. Severe pain still burning is horrible it feels like a tight band like barbed wire is wrapped around it. It gets very hot and aches. Drs. Day they see nothing wrong with it. It's not in my head no one would want this. Never again will I do this on my other knee.

Good Morning @luvndasun Welcome to Connect. I am troubled by your first post about a knee replacement that hasn’t behaved the way you imagined. I am 3 months out from my second TKR and have been recovering well. I need a bit more information about your pain and discomfort. Is it in the surgery area or the muscle and tissue around the knee. Were you given pain medication for recovery? And my last question, how did you do in physical therapy? Oops…I have one more. Have you been able to do stretch and stability exercises at home?

You deserve better than constant pain. And Connect’s mission is to improve the quality of life for every member. I look forward to your response. How are you managing to sleep?

May you be free of suffering and the causes of suffering.

Hi, @luvndasun Welcome to Connect.

I have had two TKRs (total knee replacements) and have never had a burning feeling or the type of pain you describe. Have you spoken to your surgeon? If so what has he said?

I did have pain after my second TKR but that only lasted about 6 weeks. My surgeon was seeing me frequently to check up on it, he was concerned, but then it suddenly got better! You really should not be having the pain you mention so I hope you will let your surgeon know and that they will get you in for an appointment and possibly an x-ray.

Hello @luvndasun. I noticed you posted about your TKR in two groups, so I have consolidated your posts into one that will show in both groups here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/knee-replacement-9/

I see that @artscaping and @contentandwell have both joined you so will let you connect with them!

I did physical therapy, the Dr. Said I did great was farther along than a lot of his patients. I kept telling him my knee felt like it had a tight band around it and it burns like it's on fire all the time. And so much worse standing or walking. It's around the entire top and sides of my knee. I'm in pain 24/7 pain meds don't work, CBD oil with THC doesn't work. I have a spinal stimulator for my back they adjusted it said that should help nothing again. I've tried everything. Been to my Dr. Twice more and another opinion they say my knee looks fine. I don't care how it looks I care how it feels going on 19 months now with no relief

I need a total knee replacement but am concerned since I have extensive swelling in the left knee (surguery knee) Both legs have had the swelling since 1985 and cause me no pain or discomfort. I have had extensive treatment for the lymphedema including massages, wraps, stocking and pumps. My orthopedic surgeon in concerned about the success of the replacement and possible infection. I would like to have a professional opinion should surgery be a valid concern.
thanks

Good evening @luvndasun, I just received your message and am concerned about your lack of positive response to your continued pain. Because you mention the tight band feeling, I am going to reach deep and recommend MFR, myofascial release therapy. I am not a professional medical provider. I only know that when nothing else worked for me, I turned my knee over to an MFR therapist with an Expert level rating from John Barnes, the developer of MFR.

After my second TKR, my PT and MFR therapists worked together to ensure pain-free survival. Here is some more information about MFR, found here on Connect.

Please get back to me if you need help finding a local therapist.

Good evening @kdavis409
Good evening and welcome to Connect. I certainly am sorry for your "surgery knee" discomfort. I am going to introduce you to one of our mentors who has lymphodema and had a TKR a couple of years ago. His name is @johnbishop. Neither John nor I are medical professionals so would not be able to give you that type of opinion about your surgery.

May you be free of suffering and the causes of suffering.

Hello @kdavis409, I would like to add my welcome to Connect along with Chris @artscaping and others. I was diagnosed with lymphedema in my legs a year a couple of years prior to needing a knee replacement for my right knee. I haven't had the extensive treatments that you have but I do wear compression socks daily. I wasn't able to put them on my right leg for about a month following my knee replacement but I was able to control the swelling with the icing and elevating.

I think I would also want a second opinion if my surgeon was worried about the success of the replacement and possible infection. If you would like to seek medical advice from Mayo Clinic experts, please contact Mayo Clinic directly. You will find the phone numbers and an online form here: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63
