Tapering off clonazepam (Klonopin, Rivotril)

Posted by mmussak @mmussak, Dec 19, 2018

Hi my name is Mary and I am a first time user of ever using a discussion blog online but have felt in my heart I need some advice and help with an issue I am having. My dr I have seen for many years moved out of state and referred me to another phychiatrist within his office. At the time of his moving away he had me weaning off clorazapam slowly and doing it as slow to not make it not so difficult as you all know , and I was doing well at it until I was having extreme chest pain and they put me in the hospital for 2 days to check to make sure it wasn't my heart, with all this happening I knew it was the weaning off the meds that was causing it so i went back up in dosage and it all went away again, and I was almost off it...My old dr started me on this med 27 years ago and I had no idea what it was but my body anxiety was shutting down my body and it helped it all go away so i didnt question it, well not until I went to school for nursing did I find out what it was all about. He put me on .5 mg three times a day and that stayed that way for 27 years not knowing what It does later in years, so I asked my dr to help me with the weaning off it, so our weaning process was as follows: Take .5 in a.m. ,25 afternoon and ,5 evening dose for 2 weeks then cut morning dose to .25 afternoon to .25 and evening .5 for 2 weeks then finally .25 three times a day for 6 weeks and then starting the last of the wean at this point the same as we did the first .25 till i was off. My new dr went from .50 3 times daily to .25 two times a day starting right away to get off it, that is over 1.0 mg a day off it all in one day and forward , I am already sad and crying because I dont know what to do, I have been there and I know how hard it was just to get off the way my old dr did slowly.....anyone out there that can help me with what to do I am so scared and I don't think she knows how extremely hard it is to get off this stupid stuff or that I really do want to do it, but please make it as painless as possible if there is such a thing with these meds. At 56 I didnt think I would have to go through menapause and this hell(sorry about the word but so true) all at once...at times I think it would be easier to just get cancer or something and die. Sorry but its true if you have been there you will understand. PLease help me!!!

Sounds like you’re in a better frame of mind today!! Doctors cannot limo everyone into the same catagory when it comes to benzodiazepines. They have to be very careful with whom they decide needs to quit their meds. As long as your benzo still works well for you and it helps you cope with your medical conditions at your age they need to leave you be. My benzo quit working and I had to taper. I did have to find a new doctor to help with the taper. The majority, even physchiatrists, don’t have the first clue when it comes to tapering. Sad but very true.

I'm so sorry about your condition. I can partly feel what you are going through.
I don't understand, you are taking your old full subscription amount and you feel so sick again?
I think that is much too quick. Maybe that is why I feel that way too. feel very sick plus
the damn nausea is through the roof. All day long every day. He said the Meds should "leach out in a week and make me feel better" well they don't seem to have leeched!.
I had been taking Clorazepam, total 4 a day. Feel on the edge of vomiting all day long.
Doc said only take 1 a day maybe that will aleviate your nausea. That was 2 weeks ago.
Still feel that same way. Anyone know why I am nauseous all day long? This is slow torture.
Does anyone know of anything to relieve nausea. I tried anti nausea pills ONDANSETRON with not much help. I'm 78 and thinking about getting Oxycodon and be done with this torture.

My thought is I know my body better than any doctor. And there is no one size fits all approach! I have much more pressing health issues. I’ve never had any ill effects from taking clonazepam. I have never had to stop driving. In fact when we lived in Rochester, MN I frequently drove alone to my parents in Pittsburgh and then on to Baltimore to spend time with my daughter and her husband and their infant daughter. I took care of their 14 month old daughter for 2 weeks while they were on their honeymoon. I moved to Pittsburgh to take care of my parents. I drove to Baltimore often. Then we moved from Minnesota to Vermont. My daughter graduated and they moved to Boston. I did the 3 hour drive from Vermont to Boston regularly. My daughter and her husband had no qualms about leaving their daughter in my care.
I only had problems when after several surgeries my CFS got worse. During the pandemic, I developed digestive problems but seeing a doctor was impossible. I also developed agoraphobia. None of the health issues that I have had were caused by clonazepam.
So why fix something that’s not broken?
When we moved to Vermont, I couldn’t find a psychiatrist to manage my medications. It was a psychiatrist in San Jose who put me on clonazepam for panic attacks. In Minnesota I had a psychiatrist at Mayo who managed my medications. She increased my dosage. While in Pittsburgh I again had a psychiatrist who managed my medications. So not being able to have a psychiatrist in Vermont at the University of Vermont Medical Center meant that a series of Primary Care Doctors just kept renewing my prescription.
So if anyone should take responsibility it isn’t me. It’s the doctors who kept renewing my prescription. And maybe if I had a psychiatrist in Vermont I would have been taken off the medication. But the University of Vermont Medical Center had trouble hiring doctors and then keeping the ones they had. They tried to prevent a group of doctors from establishing a medical center not associated with UVM. I have contacted Sen. Bernie Sanders many times about the state of healthcare in Vermont. He’s been very receptive to my concerns. In my last communication with him I told him that I was leaving Vermont but I still care about the people of Vermont. No drug or illness has affected my ability to communicate effectively. I am a published author and I did the book reviews for the newspaper in Rochester. I worked on a very intense inpatient unit at Methodist Hospital. I was the Unit Secretary on the hematology unit. Then when we moved to San Jose I worked on an oncology/hematology unit at Stanford University Hospital. Taking clonazepam had no effect on the quality of my performance in what many Unit Secretaries considered the toughest one in any hospital. I will fight for what I believe is best for me.
Our healthcare system is broken. It was broken before Covid and Covid made it worse. This is unacceptable in what is supposed to be the greatest country on earth.

Good news! My persistence paid off. My current PCP is backing down and will give me the full dose I have been taking for 30 years. She was punishing me as if I was taking an illegal drug. Don’t the doctors in San Jose, Rochester, MN (ie Mayo Clinic), Pittsburgh and Vermont have responsibility for continuing to prescribe this medication? No one ever questioned whether or not this was medication was appropriate. They just kept renewing my prescription. I saw this doctor on 12/22 and since then my life has been a living hell. I haven’t been able to unpack from our move. All of my other health issues have gotten worse. I went to her for help with my chronic pain, the arthritis in my spine, hip, shoulders, hands, etc. Plus I haven’t been able to eat normally for 3+ years and I have constant diarrhea. She should have referred me to a psychiatrist and not started the taper herself. She’s not qualified to oversee tapering off this type of medication.
Hugs to everyone here. I lived in the shadow of the Mayo Clinic for years and then I worked at one of Mayo’s hospitals. I have always believed that Mayo would be there for me. There’s a reason it is the gold standard for medical care.

Bean,
I agree, but don’t be so sure a psychiatrist would’ve handled the clonopin any better. Hopefully, he/she will be up to date on benzodiazepines. If you’re happy staying on the higher dose, I sincerely hope it helps you live a better life. If you decide to taper off though, I’d hope you’ll do all the research (Ashton manual is a great start), and remember to go as slowly as possible (minus 5-10% of last dose each time) and hold until withdrawal symptoms are under control. It needs to be taken seriously. I’m disgusted that your doctors pulled you off so quickly, but I’m not surprised. Best of luck to you. I used to live in Rockport, btw, just next to Gloucester.

Oh my word! I started loosing cognitive function, and my body was demanding more Klonopin.Other side effects continued to worsen.More panic attacks, anxiety, fear, and worry. This medication was never put on the market for it to be taken long term.Oops ,I found out after being prescribed many years ago.My Throid is failing, pancreas and problems with my liver. All side effects of the benzodiazepine. I want quality of life.Of and the biggest kicker is the suicidal thoughts. At my lowest,I committed suicide. This incredibly difficult to say nor admit. And as a result of my suicide,I suffered two heart attacks back to back. The doctors said my heart stopped twice. If it works for you, that's wonderful, and I truly mean that.I am forced by my health to continue to taper a couple more months.Blessings to you!

I’ve been on Klonopin for almost 40 years after a very traumatic event that went on for several months. Now, I am having many symptoms including chest pain and head pain. My doctor didn’t want to up my dose to 2mg but I talked her into it. I don’t know if it will help? I have tried to taper before with shaving off the smallest amount possible but couldn’t take the withdrawals after day 2. I wish you luck!!

I have tried that way and ended up in hospital with severe chest pains .. couldn't breathe right and hence they kept me for two days cuz it was effecting my heart...my gut was in a knot and couldn't digest any food...my body was shutting down....went back to my .5 x 3 times a day and within a few days everything went away....so let me ask u ...do they have u micro tapering??? That is the smartest ways I have heard and am slowly doing my mid day dose that way...like a 1/4 of pill every 50 days....but I am feeling hard effects already do ti dr taking me off 25 immediately in one day...

I understand you completely because I'm on clintonazepam too and it is very addicting and the withdrawal is very scary. Feels like your throat is closing. Your chest is pounding your hurt palpitations. You become very dizzy. You become very weak. I hear you cuz I was really done weaning off but I went up again too because it made me feel better
