Concerning tongue symptoms

Posted by tbyjr2022 @tbyjr2022, Dec 25, 2022

Hi everybody! I am curious if anybody has dealt with Tongue symptoms that include mild intermittent numbness, intermittent tingling, occasional soreness and some swallowing discomfort (motility is OK). ENT testing reveals nothing clinical, oral surgeon finds nothing, neurology finds nothing wrong, and everybody leaning towards burning mouth syndrome (only, without the burning). Functional neurological disorder also being thrown around as the cause. I was diagnosed with benign cramp fasciculation syndrome in 2020. Sjogrens negative. GERD, negative. Trigeminal neuralgia maybe if it’s BMS, but no other usual symptoms of TN. I’m baffled, and concerned. Appreciate anybodies thoughts on this. Be well!

Hi @tbyjr2022, Sorry to hear your doctors haven't been able to figure out the cause of the numbness, tingling and other symptoms with your tongue. I saw that you had a similar discussion started in the Neuropathy group but your neurologist didn't find anything wrong. While we wait for members with similar experiences to share I thought I would share this article in case you haven't seen it and anything rings a bell with you.

You mentioned that it's intermittent. Do you think it might be an allergic reaction to something?

Hi! No, I don’t think allergy is the issue. My major concern frankly is Neurologists and ENTs are overlooking something with the tongue/throat that is the harbinger of MND. They say no. And I believe them. But I was hoping somebody in the ENT community has had similar symptoms which would give me some bearing away from the MND worries. I did have a thread in the neurology section at one point. I thought I’d give the ENT community a try.
Thank you for the note!

I have burning mouth syndrome and it definitely includes burning.

I had irritation at the very back of my tongue and my ENT sent me out to have it scanned. The scan revealed cancer. I also had a mild sore throat and found a tumor on my larynx. If your symptoms continue be an advocate for your own health.

I have a burning tongue and numb palate. I have twice been prescribed a mouthwash and it helps eliminate the symptoms but once the prescribed medication is finished, within a week my problems return. I have been to my doctor who had me see an ENT who thought it might have an autoimmune origin. He in turn referred me to a specialist in oral medicine that I am waiting to see. No idea when that will happen. I the meantime I have to be very careful what I eat and drink. I do believe that this might be autoimmune as I have asthma and lichen sclerosis both of which have an autoimmune component. Anyone out there have other suggestions that might point in the right direction?
