Gi suggested surgery..... questions
Hi
My new gi referred me to the hospitals weight center. I had considered it yrs ago but chickened out. He referred me due to my weight even though I lost 40 pounds unintentionally due to gi and other issues. at first I thought no way but now I'm willing to keep a open mind. If I could just share some of my health issues in addition I could afford to lose 100 more pounds. But gallbladder out last Jan. Possible gastritis. Possible Gerd. That's why gi recommend surgery. Tarchacardia. Possible sjorgens. Possible mast cell, waiting to see other specialists. Had arthritis in knees over 10 yrs complete bone on bone I blame my weight for that. Told I had sleep apnea dint use cpap as I just couldn't new device my being is too high for it gi dr said bmi of 40 is bad and would only cause me more problems in the future. I just turned 55 I'm also going to be having liver scan for a enlarged fatty liver. Thank you for any feedback you can give.

If you have GERD, you will probably want to stay away from the gastric sleeve, which can worsen it. Roux-en y (RNY) is really the gold standard. I had it 22 years ago. There are bariatric surgery support groups on Facebook. You’ll learn a lot there!
The weight center will provide you with many options. Could be diet consultation, medication and / or surgery options. There are many ways they can help you lose weight. They may also help with exercise suggestion.
Surgery will not result in long term weight loss unless you also make life style changes .
To prepare for appointment, these are questions thy may ask which helps them understand your weight history.
- lowest adult weight / when
- highest adult weight / when
- what other diets have you tried, did they work, how much weight lose, how long did it stay off
- what do you normally eat a day, when, do you snake
- your physical activities
- will ask about alcohol use
I also suggest take list of all medications and supplementals you are taking.
Good luck
Laurie
