Arthritis pain

Anyone find relief from arthritis pain. I live in the northeastern USA. The. Old weather here just makes it unbearable at times.

Morning. I have bone on bone arthritis in both knees. If I have to shop at a large supermarket or a store like Home Depot or WalMart I can stand or walk for 10 - 20 minutes before I need to sit down. Yes, I do use the shopping carts for support, but there are days when that just doesn't seem to work.

I'm just about 70 years old. I used to climb Mount Washington once every few years. I enjoyed riding a bicycle from New Haven Ct to Easton or Monroe Ct every summer. Then, about 20 years ago I started having trouble with my knees,

There was no pain at first. It was the little things that tipped me off. Like I'd be helping my Dad in his vegetable garden, and it became a struggle to get back on my feet after an hour of weeding around the tomato plants. My Dad and I joked about it at first. He died before it became obvious that I became more handicapped as time went on.

I was advised to lose weight and have a total knee replacement on both knees. I lost some weight but was not at all enthusiastic about having knee surgery. Its been 5 years since I saw that knee doctor, and I was surprised that my joints hurt so much more during the winter. I had thought that cold weather would numb the knees and I'd feel less pain, but I quickly learned that the cold was not a friend. This past week, with the temps in Connecticut staying in the 30s, I have slept with a space heater close to my knees. It seems to help, but getting up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom is still painful. As I get up from bed or a chair I can hear and feel something like the ratcheting sounds you hear when you are changing a tire on your car.

Somebody asked about using marijuana for pain relief... I eat CBD gummies before going to bed. The only ones that are truly effective, at least for me, are Delta 9 CBD with THC. They stifle some of the pain and encourage the body to sleep. After shopping around both online and in the real world, I found a brand that works for me. Only problem is that each package of 10 gummies cost between $50 and $70 dollars. So I need to space them out.

I don't and won't smoke anything. Seen too many people my age with asthma and other ailments related to smoking.

Hi Nanny 23 -
Everyone finds something different, I think, depending on their pain tolerance, severity and their own body. Today I needed a long hot shower before anything would move.

Usually I am in warm(er) weather in winter, but now in Minnesota. My wake-up was when I let my hands get overly cold on Sunday - misery ever since. Now I remember my Dad's mantra - hat, mittens, warm socks (and long underwear or wind pants.) I pulled out my snuggies, fleece pants and warmest socks and don't even go into the garage without mittens or gloves.

Indoors, I use Voltaren rub to the max on sore spots, as well as an essential oil arthritis rub. (Can't use NSAID's, won't use opioids) Warm water hand soaks between tasks.

We use a heated mattress pad to keep warm at night - best investment ever! Warm the bed before getting in & keep everything cozy overnight.

Now for the hardest one - I make myself move - today I will bundle up for a brief outdoor jaunt, tomorrow in the coming blizzard, I will stretch & dance in the house.

What have you found to relieve your aches?

Well I had shoulder surgery about 8 weeks ago. Two torn rotator cuffs. Shredded bi-cep. Most painful surgery I ever had. I go to physical therapy 3 times a week. It helps but hurts when I’m there. I have no choice but to take ibuprofen. I’m done with the opioids after surgery. Don’t like to take them. Had hip replacement and knee surger and pain was minor compacted to my shoulder. Nothing really works on it since winter is here. I have a high pain tolerance but this shoulder is stubborn. I fell on ice December 2020. Had shots therapy the works would not heal. So November 2 had surgery. Stay warm in Minnesota. I hear it’s beautiful there. Merry Christmas 🎄🎁

I live on Long Island New York. I’ve had a hip replacement and a repair on my knee a torn meniscus. November 2nd I had a shoulder repair from a fall on ice in December 19th 2020. Went to physical therapy had shots to help it heal. Nothing worked. The hip and knee were a piece of cake compared to this torn rotator cuff. I had more damage than MRI showed. Cold weather making it much worse

I do yoga every morning, and when the weather's warm, I do laps for a half hour. I take a joint supplement with Glucosamine from crab and shrimp shells, Chondroitin, Msm, Turmeric, standardized Boswellia extract, and Hyaluronic Acid. I take 1,000 to 1,500mg Naproxen, but I have to switch off every 3 to 6 months to megadoses of Ibuprofen because things seem to only work for a while and then don't. Mirtazapine to help me sleep and for the pain. Acetaminophen 650mg 6 per day, which I stop taking for 3 days once a month. Undenatured Type II Collagen. Lidocaine patches. Trolamine salicylate cream, specifically Blue Emu in the tube (the only Blue Emu that works for me). I switch that off with Voltaren gel and T-Relief Arnica Arthritis Cream. 4 inch egg crate foam cushion on top of my mattress. 4 different heating pads. Ice packs and Ice slippers. KT Recovery+ Wave ring. TENS. CBD tincture and balm, and occasionally a tincture with some THC. Hot cups of tea. Watching something funny. Studies show laughter alleviates pain. I do much better since I discovered that if I keep switching some things I take and do, then what I do works much better. I think maybe it 'tricks' the signals from brain. If I had to pick one thing that helps the most, it's swimming, which helps me not only physically by helping me to keep moving, but emotionally by making me feel like I'm strong and am winning against the pain.

These things I do work. I used a wheelchair since 2014 until 2 weeks ago, when I started using a walker. Shocked the heck out of everybody, including me! In January, I plan to ditch the walker.

Looking forward to reading what others do, and adding some more things to my routine.

Best wishes,
Cookie

Check on getting some PT - massage plus exercises. It is helping me delay shoulder replacement.

Sounds like a great plan. I have a bad stomach so now I’m taking ibuprofen with stomach meds but it’s not working very well. Just had rotator uff surgery. In a lot of pain. Going to physical therapy 3 times a week. I had a hip replacement and knee repair but shoulder is the worst. Have a wonderful holiday. Sounds like you are doing well

I wish you well. I hope that you get some relief. I have been told to have my shoulder's replaced (bone on bone) but I am finishing up a year on Reclast as a transition drug from Prolia. I am wondering if anyone has had a shoulder replaced while on reclast or after taking reclast. I am not planning to have anymore reclast. My year will be up in March.
Thank you
