Posted by queensmom @queensmom, Dec 17, 2022

Hello sweeties

As newly diagnosed, as we know we need to know everything about our cancer triggers and what makes us gain control of our health. I was diagnosed with small bowel neuroendocrine carcinoma. Can you please share with me , if anyone knows , what kind of diet should i have? What to avoid? Any suggestions please 🙏🏿 thanks

Hello @queensmom

This is a good question. The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation (CCF) is a good resource for questions such as this. In searching their website I found the following article. Here is the link:

https://www.carcinoid.org/for-patients/general-information/nutrition/nutrition-and-diet-for-carcinoid-patients-an-interview-with-jeffrey-i-mechanick-m-d/

The NANCAN website also has an interesting article on what to avoid if you have carcinoid syndrome. Here is a link to that article,

https://www.netcancerawareness.org/what-to-avoid-with-carcinoid-syndrome/

If you read these articles you will see that your symptoms will dictate your diet. Queensmom, are you asking this question because you are finding certain foods are triggering symptoms?

@queensmom

It might be very helpful to keep a food journal throughout the day. That way, when you have discomfort, you can look at what you were eating prior to the pain and find the foods that trigger the pain. You could also use this to track stress and other activities that might trigger pain.

My husband had an embolization on his liver and it's almost 2 weeks, he's in alot of pain and I'm not sure what to give him to eat.......he doesn't have much of an appetite but I got some soup and a grilled cheese into him last night. We are healthy eater's so the norm won't work, brown rice and veggies I think would bother him right now! Feel better! I will give him the pre-made Muscle Milk, maybe try that? It seems gentle on the stomach....

I’m a fan of peaches and pears.. for light snacks… I stay away from processed meats.

Hello @jhilbish,

I'm glad to hear that your husband's liver embolization is over now. Will be having another one later on?

It sounds like you are getting nutritious food for him! Protein drinks can be quite helpful. There are plenty of brands on the market.

It is hard to eat when you have a low appetite. What other soft foods have you tried?

Hi,
With the embolization he just had zero appetite and when he ate he had even more pain, especially with a larger portion. I usually make a smoothie every day. I put banana, papaya, pears and blueberries in it. (papaya has digestive enzymes, the pear is great for fiber.) I use organic fruit and organic plain greek yogurt, almond milk and almond butter. I also use a super greens powder, collagen and then Muscle Milk powder. I make a large batch so he can sip on the smoothie all day! Our nutritionist is very happy with that. I thought if this is all he can get down it's full of everything he needs??? I will make oatmeal and puree it. Pureeing makes it easier to digest so I do that with soups too. Split pea is filling and veggie soups with some beans and I just puree so it goes down easier. I love to cook and we also eat healthy so I make whatever he can get down.....

Hello @jhilbish

It has been a couple of weeks since you last posted and I was wondering how your husband was feeling. Is he able to eat small meals now or are you still making smoothies?
