Collagen for osteoporosis?

My friend's medical doctor has her take collagen for her bones. I decided to try it and wondered if anyone knows more than I do about this.

I have osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, recently broke my dominate wrist and required plates and pins. My osteo surgeon prescibed 1000 ml /day vitC along with the collagen I take to increase collagen to support my bones in healing. My hair and nails are benefitting.

How much collagen should a person with osteoporosis take per day? I already take 4,000 mg. of vitamin D3, 400mg. of magnesium, and 1,000 mg. of calcium. And 1,000 mg. VitaminC.

My doctor did not recommend collagen products but 1000 ml Vit C to help build collagen. I was previously taking powdered collagen for skin and nails after parathyroid surgery.

Hello Jalo...I was interested in the posts about collagen, love the potential improvement in skin/arms! I noted your comment about having had parathyroid surgery. Would you please share your experience with the parathyroid surgery, I'm seriously considering it. How did you feel after and has it been long enough that you might have had improvement in bone density?TY!

@colely I have been considering this for some time now to keep my bones strong, so I sat down and did an hour of research. There are a lot of references to collage for osteoporosis, and wonderfully also some some documented studies. Here are links to 2 of them:

The common denominators for success seem to be:
Hydrolyzed Collagen containing Types I, II, III, V & X = 5 gram (5000 mg)/ day taken for at least 6 months.
(Also known as Collagen Peptides) Many supplements only contain types I & III which are great for hair and nails, not so much for bones.
Plus:
Vit D 800 iu/day, Calcium 1200 mg/day & Protein 1g/1kg body weight (45 gr of protein/100 lb of body weight)
Research has also shown weight-bearing exercise is needed.

By the way, do you have a measured Vitamin D deficiency? Otherwise, there is no benefit to the higher dose.

With a keen eye, you will be able to identify those with all the types of collagen, and figure out the 5000 mg (5g) dosage. There are hundreds of choices out there, gummies, capsules & powders. (Caution - the gummies seem to contain very little collagen) I have not tried any specific ones yet, so cannot recommend.

Hi kolika,
I had parathyroid surgery in May 2020 at 65 yrs old. A scan showed enlargement of parathyroid so we went in thinking I had one nodule abnormal but it turned out that all 4 were. The surgeon was able to save a small amount of tissue on right side and my pth returned to normal levels immediately but within hours they climbed, dropped climbed again dropped again over 3 days, then leveled. A few days after being home, I developed significant dizziness and sweating, my blood pressure was climbing out of control. I have since needed bp medication which I've been able to decrease recently.
I haven't had a kidney stone or kidney infection since the surgery, yeah, but do have a dry sore throat most of the time.
I am still waiting on a bone scan, covid has backed everything up.

Hello Jalo -- Thank you so much for replying and sharing your parathyroid experience. You were brave to undergo surgery during the height of Covid. I'm sorry it was necessary to remove so much tissue and that it apparently, at least in some small or big way, created those scary developments. I would have freaked out! Did you go to ER? I wondered if you wished you had not had the surgery, but apparently the reduced kidney stones and infections made it worth it for you. The dry, sore throat must be annoying, for sure. I must say this makes me, at 76, less enthusiastic about having surgery should I get a positive diagnosis from an endocrinologist following tests this month. I luckily have not had kidney stones/infections and am in good health. My severe osteoporosis is what's causing the need for testing/discussions. Again, thank you so much for taking the time to respond so quickly to my request for information. I hope you are doing well otherwise and that your bone scan (dexa?) will show improvement in your bones. Be well, Kolika.

Morning Lynn...I like that more info and interest is being directed towards emelorating our bone conditions..instead of having that sinking "oh well" feelings about what we, as patients , we can do for ourselves that not only improves our bone density, but gives us back our power to seek out reasons why we've lost so much bone.
I'm on the search for this reason myself. There has to be a point where something went wrong in my body to cause this amount of bone loss. I'm going to be seeing an Endocrinologist and get as many tests done to try and find the impetus....otherwise I'm just adding to a bucket with a hole in it...leaking out all the bone nutrients that could be going to my bone health.
MD's seem all too happy to write a script for whatever ails us...while not really seeing 'us' as an important component in regaining our bone health and overall health as well....it really is up to us!
I'm not anti-drug...just a seeker of knowledge..wherever that will lead me.
If using a trampoline helps and the data seem reasonable..then do it! If changing one's diet to a more mediterranean one would help..then change! Add in more colors...organic...it doesn't cost more when one eats this way...my costs have gone down now that I eat what I buy and buy small amounts at a time to make sure it's as fresh as I can get. Probiotics are easy to find and enjoy these days..very good for our 'gut'...grass fed dairy....come on folks...I challenge you all reading these to do something different each day for 'you'...get into the solution and out of the worry that's keeping you back from enjoying your lives. I'm here...let's do this! Hugs.....

I went to a dr for my kidneys and she noticed my parathyroid glad was saping the calcium out of my bones. She put me on calcitriol which our body produces from uvb rays. It's basically a mega vitamin D. Who knew vitamin D was so important! Check with your Dr and see if that could also be an issue for you...good luck in this medical maze...

Good Morning and Happy Holidays to you and yours. I appreciate your reply. Glad you got some info on your thyroid and will act on that info. I had that test done and my thyroid is within normal levels.
The cold weather is reminding me of my bone defects these cold days...but, this too shall pass as soon as the sun comes out and I can get into it..if only to warm up my bones!

good to get this kind of feedback. I've also been taking the 5 types of collagen each am with my coffee...adding this into all the aleloritive changes I'm making. One has to do their own homework here..as there are a lot of these products out there..and some are pure hype. I've been doing the collagen for about 4 months now and I can see a difference in the skin on my hands..smoother. ...as well as the skin on my hands in general. Not looking for miracles here...just wanting to aid in what I'm lacking to be a better 'me' at 76 1/2....
Anyone else taking collagen now?....or whatever you're doing that you feel is important...please share. Thanks you.....hugs.....
