Squamous Cell Cancer of head and neck

Posted by carolynswebb @carolynswebb, Feb 7, 2017

Does anyone know of a treatment for squamous cell cancer stage IV? My son is 47 and was given weeks to live but he is still active and now outlived the weeks by months. His treatments have stopped as the oncologists said they have given him radiation and 3 different forms of chemotherapy including immunotherapy.

Thank you so much for your response I think my biggest thing is because the doctor that she first seen in the hospital who did the biopsy said that it started in her left tonsil and had already spread to her lymph nodes so don't know how long she actually had it or how long or what the next step would be if it's spreading so that's the part that scares me I have been doing a lot of reading on different ways that this SSC type 3 Works some say it spread slowly some say once it hits your organs it's game over so I don't know again just waiting to see a doctor but first have to get the insurance are medical field has definitely changed back in the day you used to be able to go to the emergency room when you were in pain and they actually cared and did something not now soon as they know you don't have insurance for they're ready to send you home with some Tylenol 3.

I have a patient of T4aN1 Mx of age 67. Is there anyone who can help in letting me informed of any effective treatment modality? Risk factors, prognosis, and survival rate? I'll be much delighted for quicker and more urgent response.

Hi @blondiebabe1, both @jbj and @sepdvm mentioned reaching out to a social worker. All hospitals have them. Some hospitals, especially cancer centers have social workers that specialize in cancer, called oncology social workers.

You may find this blog post, written by the Mayo Clinc oncology social work team, helpful to learn more about what they do:

Please make sure that the biopsy does staining for HPV on the tumour, as this is very important when making decisions regarding treatment. Our pathologist missed that and we had to request they pull the samples for staining. All I can say is be educated, and ask many questions. Outcomes for HPV+ SCC to tonsil as a much higher survival rate than non HPV+. I wish your niece all the best and that she will get the help she needs in a timely manner. There will be scopes, CT scans, PET scans, biopsy, more scopes before the treatment plan is determined. Stay strong. You’ve got this!
