← Return to Cataract development after detached retina surgery with macular hole

I had Macular Hole Surgery about 6 months ago.
Retina was reattached and The macular hole is closed.

However, my vision in that eye is very wavy. Distortion is annoying but other eye compensates for it.
Colors are ok.
I do not think I will get any improvement.

I'm a recently retired optometrist. It is VERY common to develop cataract after retinal surgery, because any disruption of the contents of the eye can disrupt the ultra precise spacing of the fibers that make up the lens of the eye. It's also normal, no matter how annoying it is, for vision to look wavy or distorted after a macular hole repair. Again, this is because it's impossible to restore the ultra-precise spacing of the light receptors in the macula, which are very tightly packed together. It's actually an amazing advance that macular holes can even be repaired at all. Think of trying to restore a wet facial tissue after the fibers in it have been stretched by handling, that's a bit similar. Your brain may learn to compensate for and somewhat ignore the distortion that you see. I wish you well.
