Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

We walk at 8 am right now - before the heat of the day sets in, but after morning coffee. Already at noon, it is 90F but cooler weather is to come by the weekend. I think I'll go use the hose to wash the house - the mist will feel good!
I find it energizes me to go run my errands, pull a few weeds, or tackle a big chore.
We are enjoying watching the migrating birds and butterflies waking up, examining the overnight spider webs across our path and greeting our neighbors. I'm trying to get a photo of one of the green jays who visit my feeder, but they are still shy when I open the door.
Today, we walked 40 minutes - about our usual. Twice a week we try to do an hour or so - at one of the local birding parks or somewhere new.

Well, winter is coming or it’s already here, so we need to figure out a walking plan for the cold, snowy, icy days. If it’s icy, I think I’ll stay home so I don’t push my luck! I think many of us slowed down, or stopped, walking this summer because it was just TOO hot. Now the weather is cold but invigorating so we can walk faster!

So, where will you walk? Outdoors, the mall, rec center, treadmill, around your apartment building, out to see the Christmas light?

@becsbuddy Today I walked our property, raking leaves. We then mulched them up for the neighbor. It is only the first round of the annual leaf-harvest, but more will be falling in the next few days. We get out between the rainstorms to get them taken care of.

Yes, definitely brisk walking is in order, except I cannot walk very fast. I love the crispness in the air, and the beautiful colors.

What did you see on your walk today? Or yesterday?
We are in the midst of the annual butterfly migration from the US and Canada into Mexico and Central America, so each day brings new delights. Unfortunately, some of the weaker among them fail to make the trip, so we look down as well as up, sometimes finding tiny beauties to examine up close.
Yesterday, we were surrounded by dozens of lovey bright yellow butterflies about the size of a Monarch. They wouldn't stay still for me to photograph, but it looked like they had no markings - just little bits of sunshine fluttering past!
Today is my "day off" so I will wander around to the wildflowers here and try to get photos of some resting.

We are camping in eastern Arizona. The views are amazing here. The nights are just above freezing and it’s in the 60’s and sunny during the day. My husband and I have been hiking and bike riding.

I’m in. I’m not allowed to walk right now due to three eye surgeries and strep throat. I will walk the hallways of my house to get started and when I
am allowed to walk vigorously I will. See you here!

So, how is the walking going? The weather is finally palatable here in Georgia and I need the motivation to get moving. Still walking @becsbuddy ?

My husband is going to get a treadmill to keep walking this winter. He recently started his own walking program, separate from mine. I like to walk outside, not inside on a treadmill. He wants to put this thing out in the woodshed! Is he serious!?

I like the visual of "gerbil walks"!
