Altered Color Perception

Posted by julianned @julianned, Jun 25, 2019

Aside from my abnormal sputum production and torso pain (which I posted about in other groups), a new issue with my vision has developed in the past several days where, when I wake up things are the wrong color (white pillows are neon blue and green, or the ceiling neon yellow) and it lasts 1 or 2 seconds and then the pigmentation shifts to normal -- bizarre. It has happened the past 4 mornings and also when I open my eyes after lying down in acupuncture. The shapes and clarity of objects are fine, but the color off. Has anyone heard or experienced this? Today I saw an ophthalmologist who examined me and said that structurally everything looked good.

Color perception is rooted in particular cells in the retina. They react to pressure and also to the chemicals that we take in to opur bodies. There are standardized tests to measure color perception that will differentiate red/green "blindness". One common change that occurs due to deprivation of oxygen and pressure manifests itself and losing contrast, i.e. the print in books appears to be less black, That signals possible elevated eye pressure meaning that glaucome may be ocurring in the eye where the normal eye pressure becomes elevated because the fluid mechanism isn't allowing the the fluid to exit the eye fast enough and requires medication for this, but actual color changes are usuallly caused by toxins that that have been ingested such as arsenic or other metals or any array of possible chemicals. I also have this. I take a short nap and when I open my eyes my living room, mainly my furniture is a different color only for a few seconds and sometimes the whole room will be green.

Hi, this sounds similar to my situation. Upon waking, I also have varying colors - including orange, lime green, yellow and pink hues. Additionally, I have black lines across my vision that change from coiled to straight to river-like anytime my eyes have been closed for more than 2 or 3 minutes. They fade and disappear within 3-5 seconds. I have had repeated checks with an ophthamologist, the last time was 4 weeks ago. My depth perception is also altered at times, and things are farther away than they appear to me. Again - this is upon waking in the morning. I want to mention that I have had 4 serious deer tick bites in the past 3 years, and that this started after the second one. Finally, I have been referred to Stanford Neurology - and am hopeful that they can find the issue. My MRI's of my brain also show lesions similar to MS lesions and I have mild enlargement of my ventricles.

The color changes I experience are the same as tisriley, decabea, and pwb. For me it happens most often while I'm trying to work and fall asleep (I have a low blood pressure and some meds that make me sleepy, plus sleep apnea & I can't always wear my C-Pap.) for a few minutes or just have my eyes closed for a few minutes. When I open my eyes I'm usually looking down at the keyboard and it will be a different color. Lately it's been navy blue every time but before it was a variety of colors. I've also had an entire room be a different color, with all the edges brighter than the rest. I have heart failure, for which I have an LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device). It's a pump inserted in my heart that pumps the blood for it. I'm also on multiple medications.
I'd love to hear any information that is discovered!

I like hearing that I'm not the only one that experiences this

Very interesting reading all the information. I am 68 years old and have been on Blood pressure meds for about 30 years. About 3 months ago I suffered a Heart Attack and had triple bypass surgery. Taking blood thinners now. I started having color changes about a year ago. I thought I must have a brain tumor or something. It is good to know that I am not alone. My episodes only happen if I take a nap in the afternoon. I wake up and my whole living room can be one color...sometimes it is just my furniture. My living room is all beiges and browns and when I wake up the whole room can be blue or sometimes it is just my couches can be green. Only a few seconds but so bizarre.

Hey, I've been a diabetic, T1 for 25 years. When my vision gets bad everything turns green tinted. Every time this happens, I go to the hospital/urgent care and they said my kidneys are about to fail. I end up in hospital for several days because of dangerously low phosphorus and magnesium.

It's called Diabetic Keto Acidosis. It makes me vomit, lose appetite, and lose my ability to function.

If things look green when I wake up, and it doesn't clear up in a few minutes, I know I have to go to the doctor. Even if my blood sugar is fine. Sometimes I wake up feeling like I'm going to barf up a lung. It sucks. I wish I could find some kind of assistance or help. I can't even work right now. I do know that the green or weird tinted color is a major warning sign to me. I'm no doctor or nothing, but I know that eyesight is a sense we are highly dependent on, and when it messes up, it's important to it checked out.

Hi Jennifer, I am battling with an as yet unidentified infection and dizziness is a major symptom. When dizzy I hang my head between my knees and the other day when I opened my eyes the grey stripes in my socks were psychedelic green! It was JUST as you described. I also suffer from POTS so am no stranger to dizziness and though I have had visual disturbance before never in colour.

I experience this too. Any information would be helpful.
