Suggestions for an adjustable weighted vest for bone strengthening?

Posted by fiesty76 @fiesty76, Jan 23, 2021

I think it was a member of this forum who mentioned having a vest that could have added weights added. If so, could that person or others who have one recommend a specific brand of vest to purchase? I am off Reclast at present for my osteoporosis and am interested in add more weight bearing help. Thank you.

Okay, I'm on a mission to attack Osteoporosis without medication! After a horrendous experience with osteo meds that are not guaranteed to begin with I've decided to attack this Osteoporosis with diet and exercise!!! If any of you have experience traveling "up" this road jump on in here. I'm a vegetarian with a ton of autoimmune and food allergies and have implemented high calcium food items into my regime. I also purched a weighted vest at the suggestion of a PA. According to my PA we cannot make bone without weight, our own or other. I'm thin and need some additional weight. I have just begun this journey and will see how things progress. Keep me in prayer as I do all of you battling this. Thanks!

Hi @colleen67, I moved your post to this existing discussion that @fiesty76 started in the Osteoporosis & Bone Health group:

I did this so you can read previous post by members talking about weighted vest and to connect with members like @sueinmn @cpd @sallyjoan as well as the helpful replies you've already received from @pp27va and @tsc.

Hi @colleen67, Dr. Loren Fishman has a yoga program and an ongoing study to build bone density. Google Dr. Loren Fishman "12 Poses vs Osteoporosis." @johnbishop posted the link, but I'm not sure what topic it's under. I've been cautioned about weighted vests causing fractures so be careful...

How many pounds are you adding? I ask because I added
5-lb weights to my daily walks about a month ago, and now I have some knee pain. So… go slow!

Oh! I’ve heard about injuries going way too fast with weight. It can be so troubling!! I started at a pound… (that is the usual recommended start weight). It seems silly, but the lack of injury is so worth it! I kept thinking “this is a waste of time”… but I really don’t want to have to take months off with doing it fast and only having myself to blame!! I added 1/2 pound after a few weeks.. then just kept adding 1/2 every few weeks. At 5 pounds I started adding 1 pound every 2 weeks. I’m up to 7lbs.. I am aiming for total of 12. Take your time!!! (The suggested total is 10% of your body weight). Going slow I have gradually increased my strength and now I’m getting cocky thinking I can do more… but I really will not allow it. I gave my extra weights to my daughter and told her to only give them to me after 2 weeks! Ha! The last few times I’ve been adding 1 pound instead of a half and feeling it more as I go up. I may need to slow the addition a bit just to be sure I don’t loose form while walking and ability to keep a good pace. Will see how it goes. I love using it for exercises and it is brutal addition to wall sits!!
Good luck.. go slooooow! There is no race here and you want to be careful.
