My Experience on Evenity for Treating Osteoporosis
Thought I would share for those considering or on Evenity for osteoporosis:
Afer much research and discussions with my GP and Cardiologist, I have decided to start my treatment with Evenity injections. As with all drugs, there are many side effects. My biggest concerns were stroke and heart attack. However, considering that I do no have any history for either, for me personally, the benefits outweigh the risks. As my GP said to me, "if everyone only thought about the side effects of the drugs, no one would be taking them".
I had my first injections (subcutaneously in the back of each arm) on June 30th. The nurse that administered the injections discussed the drug in depth, along with all the possibilities that may occur. She also mentioned that for all the patients that she has seen, none has had any side effects.
The injections are once a month for only one year, so I'm hoping that this works well for me and I can improve my bone density, especially in my spine, where I need it the most.
My endocronologist has also prescribed Hydrochlorthiazide for my idiopathic hypocalcemia. I have an appointment with an allergist this month to confirm whether I still have an allergy to sulfa drugs, since this drug contains sulfa. Apart from this I take D3 orally and try to obtain additional calcium through foods not supplements. Trying to walk 3-4 times a week and will begin with a few weight bearing exercises.
My journey began September, 2019 when I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. After waiting to see three doctors, receiving three denials from insurance company for Evenity, which took several months, I am hopefully on my way for a favorful outcome.

@windyshores osteoporosis was the only reason given as to why the break in the leg bone. The orthopedic surgeon who looked at the x-ray said that the bone should have appeared white on the x-ray instead of the grey tones he was seeing and he was also concerned about osteoporosis.
Three months after the broken leg bone I had rotator cuff surgery and the suture anchors, which were screwed into the arm bone, pulled out. I returned for a second shoulder surgery to remove the anchors. I was again told that the cause could have been thinning bone tissue in the arm which was not able to hold on to the suture anchors.
I wonder how accurate the DEXA scans are.
I am aware that Evista is not the first choice of medication after going off Evenity to hold on to the gains in bone density. I believe it was my only choice. I am scheduled for another DEXA scan in one year to see if the Evista is helping me hold on to bone. Am also wondering if the DEXA in a year is soon enough. In the meantime I am fully engaged with diet, supplements and exercise.

2 ReactionsYes, it is alarming to think that the DEXA does not reflect what is actually going on with bone density. I have never taken strontium, which is known to elevate the DEXA results. The only course of action is to move forward doing the best I can for bone health.
Yes, I have after the first 2 shots. I treated it with otc migraine meds. I also had itching. Subsequent injections resulted in fatigue and continued itching. Even on the palms of my hands. No rash was evident. Bloodwork indicated increase in lymphocytes and decreased neutrophils. These were marked changes from previous bloodwork. I agreed to take shot 6 and end this protocol. I also plan on contacting Amgen to see what they say.
I’m curious how you were finally able to persuade the insurance company to accept Evenity?

Hi,
I’m new to tho blog. I started Evenity injections 2 months ago. Both months after the injections I suffers 3-4 days with flu like symptoms, dizziness, headaches. I’ve also experienced headaches throughout the month. Has anyone else experienced this ? I’m already dreading the next 10 injection.

You may have read my posts re: my experience w Evenity. I managed to get in 8 months of injections but after discussing my side effects w my endocrinologist, we decided to pause a month to see if they resolved. Starting at month 6, I noticed a lot more aches, a rash on my scalp, cough/congestion (last month), and a general brain fog and even anxiety and depression.
I feel much better, mentally have cleared up, the rash gone, and the cough almost gone. So relieved!
So, though I think Evenity works for most it became intolerable for me.
I’m discussing the next step in November- leaning toward biphosphonates.
Kinda leery of Prolia because of my experience.

1 ReactionHello, you said your injections for evenity started in September 2019 so you must be completed. I'm about to start and I am constantly worrying about the side effect of heart attacks, strokes etc. Can you tell me anything that can help
my bone density was- 46 in the spine
and 32-34 in my hips
i have been on Forteo for 1 year
my new results came back
-40 in the spine and hips the same
just wondering has anyone had any results after 1 year like this
is this good or bad ????
i am dealing with a 1/2 stomack i had a gastronomy 40 years ago????
