Neuropathy: Anyone have any experience with gabapentin?

Posted by sjhedcon @sjhedcon, Mar 21, 2020

I have loss of feeling in my feet and tingling sensation. My doctor prescribed gabapentin. I read the side effects and decided not to take this med.
Anyone have any experience with gabapentin?

I was on Lyrica and it wasn’t helping much so my doctor switched me to Gabapentin recently. So far no side effects but it doesn’t seem to be helping the Peripheral Neuropathy in my feet. I am also on gummies with CBD/THC to help me sleep and pain and I take two Tylenol 1s, twice a day. Even with all that I am still in a lot of pain. He has me on a lower dose so maybe need to increase. Sorry not much help here but I’ve had no side effects.

I have Been taking for 4 years it helps but side effects are worse then the Satan drugs "Opioids" from what I am now finding it will be harder to get off of then those Satan drugs. I have been taking Oxy and Ms-contin for the last 15 years without any problems. The side effects are worse then almost all the other meds the only one worse was "Methadone". The first thing Doctors are taught is how not to be influenced by the patients needs specifically when it comes to pain. Do the surgery and if it goes bad kick them out the door.

Have tried about every medication there is. Nothing works. They only produce side effects. Gabapentin will cloud your ability to think.

Welcome @jptartaglini1, It sounds like you also have been diagnosed with neuropathy but haven't found any treatment that helps. The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy has a list of complementary and alternative treatments that others have found helpful for relieving the painful symptoms of neuropathy -- https://www.foundationforpn.org/treatments/.

Have you tried any complementary or alternative treatments?

John, I am a caregiver who cares for someone very close to me. The PN started after surgeries to replace knees. Since then, over 15 years, I have researched and tried literally everything. There are things that help with the pain but nothing provides satisfactory relief. Been to numerous Neurologists, m.d.'s who supposedly specialize in PN but nothing new was suggested. I'd suggest using Tens, a spikey ball rolled under the feet and nsaids. This coupled with walking is our current regimine.

I just came across an article in Muscle & Nerve, Vol. 34 Issue 6 December 2006 which reports a study with patients on a gluten free diet. The authors are MD’s. It was a small study but worth publishing.

Hi. GABA did a number on my head. I was taking it for PASC. But when I stopped taking it I noticed some Neuropathy issues kick in a little more. Don’t know if there is a connection and not going to test it. I am DM2 as well. I gotta say something though. I notice that my neuropathy goes as my BS goes. Any one notice that? If I eat no carbs for a day the neuropathy basically is not an issue at all. They say it should not be affected that fast but it is what it is. Also take zinc and selenium for the PASC which helps and it also seems to help the ńeuropathy and tingling as well. I have a couple other natural things I take to help with sugar level as well. I am still figuring this out.

I am currently taking 300mgs 4 times a day. 6 hours apart. I do think it is effective with my peripheral neuropathy. I especially notice it if I forget to take it. In two hours my pain level goes up a couple notches. Take it and in about an hour I start feeling better. Ok, it probably works some, but I can't imagine weaning off it. It feels like I begin withdrawals only after a couple hours! Anyone else experience this?
