Neuropathy: Anyone have any experience with gabapentin?

Posted by sjhedcon @sjhedcon, Mar 21, 2020

I have loss of feeling in my feet and tingling sensation. My doctor prescribed gabapentin. I read the side effects and decided not to take this med.
Anyone have any experience with gabapentin?

I took both for Neuropathy with the hope they would help my seizures. Neither one helped my Neuropathy or seizures. I was on the fentanyl patch for other reasons, but it helped my neuropathy.
I had muscle side effects from Lyrica. I was in my doctors office one day and everyone in the waiting room was talking about Lyrica not one person there liked it. I know a lady who takes Lyrica for fibromyalgia, and she said she couldn’t get along without it.
Gabapentin helps my brother tremendously. Neither of us had any noticeable side effects on Gabapentin.

Yes, I have been on it for years and babe never had any problems at all with it. I recently had a cervical fusion and the hospital doctor told me to stop gabapentin until I saw my surgeon again, I had horrible steering pain in my chest muscles into my shoulders, stopping it was a huge mistake and the doctor made an error, I was told to start and by the end of the day that part of my pain was gone. I know a lot of people are saying negative things here but but don’t be swayed as everybody is different so you can try it and see how it works for you , I’m sure of the doctors prescribing feels it might help you. Good luck to you!

My experience with Gabapentin was simple. I was on it for several years. It was a total waste of time and money. No benefits, No anything but money going out. Everyone is different, so be careful.

Have no side effects, but also not a lot of therapuetic help either.

I was on 600 mg three times a day. I did not feel that it did anything for me - but some people, on even smaller doses, say it is very helpful.

True enough, but the opposite is also true. I took 3,600 mg a day and got no relief from neuropathy or seizures. I wonder had I taken more if I would have. One man didn’t get any relief until he was taking 7,000 mg a day.
I’ve read that some patients doctors refused to increase their dose above 900 or 1800 mg a day.
Best of luck,

Apparently, you’re getting some therapeutic benefit from Gabapentin.
Would you share what dose you're taking?
Thanks,
Jake

I responded weeks ago very negatively. I really appreciate your response. I hated it but we are all so different. How we got where we are and what we are struggling with. I will be a little less positive about how "correct" I am. Thinking about it more I still won't take it but it is obviously very good for others. I will also not be so quick to take advice either. I hope you keep getting better and yes doctors are human too.

Thank you, I liked your part about how we all got here and our struggles, it’s not easy is it? Good luck to you as well.

I have used it off and on for several years . There are a lot of side effects . Anger , trouble urinating, ear ringing are a few I have experienced. I had a question myself for others who have taken it . Does it take away the numbness and make your feet feel normal ? It does for me and I was wondering if this was a common thing for everyone . Once the dose wears off my numbness returns . I used to only use it when I had pain . I would use it for a few days then stop . Now I have pain all the time . So I use it all the time now with Cymbalta which seems to take the edge off of the anger some .
