Pain in the butt - Can't sit down

Posted by ecalderman @ecalderman, Nov 21, 2012

I have had very intense pain at my sitz bones for over 7 months and am unable to sit down. when I sit, it feels like I am sitting on two hot pokers or rocks and it is really unbearable. So, I have been standing for seven months. I've been to a couple of spine and pain management doctors, an orthopedist, a chiropractor, a neurologist, an acupuncturist, and a massage therapist. The original diagnosis was ischial bursitis but that ha not appeared on any images. I don't have any issues with any of my lumbar disks. I'm in constant pain even when standing or lying down though those activities do not hurt as much as sitting. Has anyone heard of anything like this before?

I had a bad fall and damaged my coccyx . I couldn’t sit for months. Tried everything. Finally someone suggested a chiro who did anal corrections. He said it sometimes took 2 or3 adjustments , Gently massaging the overly curled coccyx. It worked like magic. Returned a few months later as it returned and I was totally cured after that. Not a pleasant experience but totally painless. He had dozens of patient. Some after childbirth and many from a culture where virginity was essential and young women need treatment after anal sex. I slipped on ice and crashed down right on my tailbone.

For sitting problem, here is a response for you all. A few years back my girlfreind fell rollerblading and broke her tailbone. Doctors told her not much they could do but let it heal. After 1 year still had problems sitting so back to doctor only to be told everything is fine must be in your head, take aspirin. Then she had a meeting with a holistic doctor about something else and that person asked her if anything else was bothering her? Yes she said, found out the bone had lots of inflammation and scare tissue around it. The suggestion was made to massage that area, which she did and in like 3 weeks ahead was pain free.

I have the same issues you have and have tried most of the same solutions. My coccyx is currently
being checked but have not got the results yet. I will post the result later.

I have the exact same symptoms. CANT SIT!!! Nothing but pain in the butt all the way up to back. I have had a PARS defect repaired L5-S1 fused no relief. I have had a tethered cord surgery no relief. I have fasiculations or visual spasms in my butt all the way down to my ankles. Feels like it’s going off like popcorn poping. I had the burning for like 4-5 years. I had the two surgeries in one year. Today Dr wants me to go to neurologist today to see if pain is coming from brain. Don’t know which way to turn anymore. Anybody got any suggestions.

Have considered trying a spinal stimulator?

As per Ischra45’s response, I too have had cortisone shots in the ischial bursa that did help. The shots were given by a specially trained physician in my orthopedist’s office.

I’ve had your symptoms for several years and recently I slipped and fell right on my bottom. Then I really was in pain in my backside. My Spine and Pain doctor gave me steroid injections in my bursa and I’m pain free now. I’m praying that it will last!
So sorry you can’t get any relief.

Looked this up and repetitive motion, like sitting alot, bike riding and/or other sports can aggravate it. Like most things, stretches can help relieve the referred pain from tight glutes, hamstrings (!) etc. Do get a referral with PT after your next shot. It's the best time to deal with this. Ice packs, bio freeze, lidocaine patches or other topical fixes can help. Maybe a donut or other type of pad would help? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK482285/

Is your pain in the rectum? If so I have a few ideas. I have had that pain for a long time but i have relief a couple of ways. I can’t sit for 10 minutes without causing pain.
