Liver transplant: TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt)
I had a TIPs procedure 15 mos ago to control portal hypertension, ascites & bleeding. I have been fine since then & no longer qualify for a transplant . How long have others TIPs shunts lasted ?

@seho, Thank you for sharing your experience. You have given a perfect example of how we are each affected differently, yet we all share identical uncertainty for the future. I can identify with your critically ill factor, and I do not want to re-experience that, either. I am especially happy that your kidneys have reacted positively to medications. I had acute kidney failure along with my liver failure, and was on dialysis while waiting for my transplant.
You have mentioned that you no longer drink alcohol. How difficult was that for you? What are some other lifestyle changes that you have adopted for better health?
@benlam11, Thank you for reaching out and for sharing your complicated and frightening history. I am happy for you that you are comfortable with your current medical providers. How are you feeling? And are there any lifestyle changes that the doctors are suggesting in order to help you actively promote your better health?
Hello, I put this question in the Liver Transplant group yesterday but posting again in the specific TIPs group. My husband is listed for a liver transplant but chances are rare where we live. Doctors have recommend TIPs to help him deal with his accute ascites for a better quality of life. Wondering if anyone in this group has had TIPs and has it helped. We do understand that a possible side effect of TIPs is HE particularly at the start when the body is getting used to the new way of processing the blood. Any comments would be most appreciated! Also asking this Group's Admin for any comments or advice. Thank you!
Does anyone had a Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (tips). My liver transplanted start with Portal Hypertension
TIPS - Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt - is a procedure for diverting blood flow away from the portal vein. A shunt creates an opening between the portal vein and the hepatic vein, which carries blood from your liver to your heart to reduce pressure in the portal vein. It often stops bleeding from esophageal varices.

I want to invite some members who have discussed their experiences with the TIPS procedure. @lcd, @marinab,@cybele65, @athenalee - Did you have the TIPS procedure before or after your liver transplant?
@arqui02000, What questions would you like to ask?
I am trying to reach these persons and I can’t how I could connect with them?

It was my husband (not me) who had TIPs last June. He is listed for a transplant but chances of that remote, hence his opting to have TIPs to improve his quality of life, particularly with ascites and related hernias. The last few months have been challenging as he developed severe Edema in his whole leg area but that is now almost gone with diuretics. Also his ascites has greatly lessened (he might have to go in every 3 or 4 months for fluid drainage, compared to every 4 weeks before TIPs). He is also feeling generally better so it looks like things are finally settling down.
