Who's taken Myrbetriq for overactive bladder? Results?

Posted by fdixon63 @fdixon63, Sep 14, 2022

I've seen a urologist today for urgency and frequency issues. He has prescribed Myrbetriq. When I came home I checked for possible interaction with current meds. It shows a "moderate" level of interaction with my Propafenone (heart rhythm) and Amitriptyline (sleep aid.) I've called the office but it will be tomorrow before they double check with him to clarify that it is OK for me to take Myrbetriq. Wondering if there are others who have been in this situation. Thanks.

@fdixon63, I'm tagging a few members like @rfherald @contentandwell @downtowntiger @nbrud @david2dave, who have taken or considered Myrbetriq (mirabegron) for urgency and frequency issues and who may be able to share more.

Did you find out anything more in the meantime about possible interactions with your other medications and conditions?

Good evening @fdxon63. I also take Merbetriq for similar reasons. When my PCP was informed that recent research was indicating that oxybutynin can increase cognitive impairment in senior patients, she replaced it with Myrbetriq. I noticed somewhat less stress incontinence simply because the medication relaxes the bladder muscle and allows the bladder to fill more before demanding to be emptied.

After a recent bladder sling surgery, I chose to remain on Merbetriq for the very same reasons, especially post-surgery. It has been a couple of months and I think it is still keeping that muscle relaxed and improving my surgery outcome.

You will find out that this medication is rather "spendy". There are some assistance options mentioned online.
My thinking is that I will continue to pay for medication that performs a necessary function.

Are you also doing pelvic exercises?

May you be safe, free, and protected from inner and outer harm.
Chris

@fdixon63 , I have taken Myrbetriq for more than a year and have found it is quite successful at relieving OAB. I have not experienced any interactions with lamotrigine, the only other prescription drug I take. Myrbetriq is, indeed quite "spendy" running into thousands of dollars per year without the benefit of insurance. The there are several patents for mirabegron that won't expire until the 2030's, so I am looking into the several substitutes like oxybutynin that are available.

I DID find information at drugs.com. Not EVERYTHING on the Internet should be trusted (hah!), so if you see something that concerns you, check with someone with authority.

@colleenyoung, I appreciate your assistance in helping my getting answers to the question on Myrbetriq. Three days after my post to you I was admitted to the hospital for COVID--eight days. Delving into the question and answers became a very low priority. I never started the medication. I wanted to get myself back to pre-COVID condition so I could tell how I was responding. I did contact my cardiologist. They said they were ok for me to take Mybetriq but it might increase propafenone levels and I would need to get an EKG done after I start on it. When I said this to the Urology nurse she said the doc said OK to try Gemtesa 75 mg. He said there would be no interaction with my other meds. Thanks to all who stepped up with information. Best of health wishes coming your way.

fdixon, thanks for the update. While I'm sorry to hear that you had a set back having caught COVID which required 8-days hospitalization, I'm thrilled to hear that the connections you made here and information that @artscaping and @rfherald shared was helpful.

How has your recovery been from COVID? How are you doing on Gemtesa?

@fdixon63 One thing to remember using g Myrbetriq - give it week to ten days. It doesn't go to work right away like oxybutynin.

Recovery from COVID is slow. That is to be expected because of having two lung infections plus bronchiectasis already. I opted to have at home PT and a nurse to check on me for a couple of weeks. I'm concerned now that my 02 levels keep moving down. Left the hospital at 98% and now it is down to 93%. I'm well enough to have a good attitude so will continue with exercises and have the nurse check on me again this week. PT went well so they have been released. Thanks much.

The literature I read from drugs.com said might take eight weeks. Yikes, your estimate is much better. Thanks.

I re-started Myrbetriq and I'm at about day 10 and can notice that I can put off going to the bathroom a little longer - maybe a minute or two. I was on Oxybutynin before and it goes to work right away. You take the pill at bedtime to help getting through the night. I think Myrbetriq is better but Oxybutynin is WAY cheaper. It's always a trade-off.
