Post Traumatic Stress Disorder & Severe Anxiety...

Posted by Roxie43 @roxie43, May 26, 2012

Have you been diagnosed with PTSD? Are you experiencing enormous amounts of added stresses that exacerbate your condition and make you feel anxious all the time?
PTSD is a medical disorder that sadly has profound effects on the individuals life. I recently found out, by one of my provider's that panic attacks can even occur when we are sleeping. I never knew this but it explained why I get up in the middle of the night feeling like my breathing has stopped and I need air. I sleep with a fan in my face year round for aging reasons so I'm getting plenty of air. I also participated in a sleep study to ensure that I did not have Sleep Apnea but I don't.
Waking up like this is very scary and at times I'm afraid of falling asleep. I'm glad that I mentioned it to one of my psychiatrists because not knowing what was happening was inducing even more discomfort and anxiety.
When we are the victims of traumatic experiences and/ or are re-traumatized life can become so uncomfortable but please keep in mind that; If, we were strong enough to survive the traumatic experience/s we are all the more powerful in our continued efforts to heal!
Our faith will be tested as well as our self worth but don't waiver my friends because we are survivors and this too will be an opportunity for us to show just how passionate we are about deserving meaningful lives.
Hugs,
Roxie ~

You know Rox that I'm not sure about me. As you know I have suffered anxiety from a very young age and depression later. I have not been sleeping well and have been waking as you have mentioned . I know panic well and I woke up the other night after an absolute nightmare in total panic and couldn't get back to sleep. I have not slept properly for days on end. My faith never really falters as you know it's just tested alot sometimes. I have had added stresses asyou know. I know that we are survivors, I have spend a lifetime surviving Hugs Piglit

Dear Piglit,
You should report this to your doctors. I'm glad that I told them all because I was really thinking that I was going to pass away in my sleep. The feeling is so freightening. I literally stop breathing and my body jumps waking me up startled. We are definitely two peas in a pod.
Your last sentence is profound, Piglit, a lifetime surviving... I feel the same way. I thought that life was getting better because I was working so hard at fixing myself when what needs fixing are heinous people in this world.
I think that we have earned all the beautiful butterflies and angel's ...

Hi rox I try to calm myself down. I do alot of slow deep breathing. My dad when he was alive taught me how to relax from my head down to my toes and sometimes it will work. I also try to take my mind elsewhere as in thinking about somewhere I really love to go a walk on the beach, being in an open field surrounded by beautiful flowers, I am lucky that I can do this with my thoughts.I also if it's really bad will not remain in bed . I will get up and walk around, turn on the TV anything for distraction. I feel in many ways that I.m lucky as I have had anxiety from a really young age that along the way I have self taught myself to cope, if I can. If the anxiety/panic is really high and all else fails I pick up the phone and talk usually to Mum or Nige it helps if people know , it reassures you to hear a voice. Hugs Piglit

Thank you Piglit. I just finished doing a little retail therapy/distraction. I'm trying to find ways to cope that don't involve popping pills every time my heart starts to race.
Shopping, however, I have to be hyper vigilant about because at one time it was my only coping mechanism.
I do feel better after speaking with mom or my daughters.
