Anxiety during sleep: It wakes me every AM from sleep.

Posted by esikora @esikora, Nov 13, 2021

Hello,
As stated above, every AM at around 5, I start having uncomfortable adrenaline-like waves throughout my body. If I try to sleep, the waves cause weird dreams and then I wake up. This has been going on for about eight months. There has been considerable stress in my life during this time, but now things are improving, but the waves are just as bad.
Has anyone ever experienced this?
Thanks.

Yesterday I had a knee ablation. Went well but I had to double my hydrocortisone to 40 mg for the day due to my adrenal insufficiency. My procedure was under light sedation which I in no way felt but the pain level with the needles and burning was minimal. However by the time the day ended I was ravenous with hunger and so hyper I was up an hour later than usual and eating ice cream at 9 PM. I am sure it was the result of the corticosteroid increase plus they injected prednisone into the knee area to assure pain relief over the next few days. If I had to be on any dose higher than my present, I would be certifiable. I never gained weight nor got a moon face from my dosage and in fact had trouble gaining and keeping on weight. But I finally got to sleep and no anxiety at least. I hope the butter dishes connection makes itself known to you. Hard to fathom where our brains search out these ideas from.

Butter dishes are still a mystery…😂
Over eating isn’t. I’m eating like there is no tomorrow. I try not to but… I’m down to 30 mg of prednisone and the hunger is getting worse.
Ironically, I lost 30 pounds over the last year and now this. Well, when I finally get off this stuff I know what to do to lose weight.
I hope you have a great day and your knee is not too painful. Knees are rather important 🏃🏽‍♀️
I’ve had both mine replaced.

Thanks for the heads up. I was hoping for a TKR but had polio as an infant and my quads on that side are too weak to support a replacement. I would be at great risk for being worse. I have a fierce dread of being wheelchair bound so prefer hobbling to any lesser alternative. I always thought corticosteroids were an automatic weight gain but I never had that. Good your limit is now 30. That is a huge improvement and I know it took some effort to get there. It is a tough journey. Take care S.E. M.E.

You are a fighter! I’m sorry you are going through this. However, you are a very strong person and you will be fine.
Polio virus has been detected recently in the water in New York City!
My great-grandfather had polio. He died the year before I was born so I didn’t have the opportunity to meet him.

By the way, those butter dishes are gone…😁

Be blessed!

Senseless that anyone today should get polio. It saddens me if parents don't allow their children to be immunized and adults should certainly be sure to get the vaccine. Such silly and dangerous ideas out of control.

I occasionally feel waves when I wake up, usually from a nap. Kind of unpleasant, but not fear filled. Weird. Anyone relate? I also struggle with anxiety sometimes.

Wow! So thankful to hear about this problem of anxiety upon waking! I have been experiencing this for months off and on ever since I had Covid 2 years ago. Even before I am fully awake my heart is pounding. I have to get up and take a Xanax then go back to bed until things calm down. Low dose does not make me sleepy thankfully. My psychiatrist says this is "normal" for his patients with anxiety issues. I had back surgery over a year ago and am still suffering with lots of pain except when I am lying down. I know that has caused lots of stress for me physically and mentally. Thanks for sharing. This has been helpful.

I’ve lived with chronic anxiety since I was a teenager. I’m now old as dirt and still living with chronic anxiety, but now it’s considered a disorder. I no longer worry about its origin. I simply take a 1 mg Klonopin and go on with my day. It’s my body chemistry. 40 years of psychotherapy and becoming a therapist myself could not extinguish this little quirk.
I’m not a fan of big Pharma, but in all reality, this is what meds are for. You take the pill that helps you live a normal quality of life.
I was born with strange body chemistry. I’m glad I have found a solution that is correct for me. I do not apologize for it, I am grateful for having excellent healthcare.

When I recently (finally) decided to try a pharmacologial approach to my morning issue (going on over two and half years, see posts above) I specifically asked for Klonopin, but the provider pushed Effevor, which I refused. So I tried Buspar, which hasn't helped the 5 am creepies.
I like your acceptance of this problem as a"quirk", not a curse.

Thanks for you input! That makes me really sad, and I want to hold onto hope that there's a more natural solution out there instead of a sedative. But I'm also glad you found something that works for you. ❤️❤️
