Posted by majid12 @majid12, Sep 1, 2022

My wife has blood disorder and we just found out recently because she contacted covid and we have been treating the covid for about 5 months, but we discovered that what normally causes her nose bleeding for years has been blood disorder and which the doctor said it could be acute leukemia, she often have fever nose bleeding and f weakness and buses in her arms and short of breath and pain in her chest, is that the signs of acute leukemia and if it's what can we do, can she survive it ?

Hello, @majid12 ‘You have leukemia” are words that put fear in our hearts and clips us off at the knees. My husband and I had similar news and reaction 3 years ago when I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia out of the blue! While it’s a formidable foe, with treatment it is definitely survivable.

Some of the symptoms you’ve mentioned can be classic signs of leukemia. But there are many types and there needs to be a confirmed diagnosis so your wife can begin treatment as soon as possible.

Her next step will be to see a hematologist/oncologist who specializes in blood disorders. She’ll also have more bloodwork done and possibly a bone marrow biopsy to get to the ‘blood manufacturing center’ of her immune system. That can give the best view of the health of her blood cells.

Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, I’m here for you. Has your wife seen a hematologist yet?

Is she currently seeing an oncologist/hematologist? If not please see one immediately. They have all the tests she needs to have to find out what is going on. She should not have to live like this - there is help and hope! I know because I've been in treatment for leukemia for 7 months. The first visit is scary but after that you know have someone as interested as you are in getting well!
Wishing you all the best.

I’m relieved to hear she’s currently in the hospital. The oncologist will most likely order the bone marrow biopsy and from there they can determine if she has any mutations in her cells which may have contributed to her leukemia. With that knowledge the doctors can target her specific leukemia and treat it accordingly.

If she has an acute myeloid leukemia the treatment will be aggressive but it is generally affective in helping her reach remission.

We’re getting the cart before the horse at this point so please let me know as soon as you find out and we’ll work through this together. As you can see you and your wife will have some support here on Connect from people who have walked that walk.

I also know this is particularly stressful on caregivers. How are you doing?

We’re here for you, Majid. The benefit of sharing in the forum is that you get the support and experience of many people who have been there.

I’m sorry to hear that the video news didn’t look promising. But, like @loribmt said, don’t jump too far ahead. You want to get all the information first. I’m glad that a hematologist/ oncologist is being consulted.

It must be so hard to be far away from your love. Thank goodness your wife’s doctor is including you by video. Might you be able to take leave to be with your wife if necessary?

I’m sorry to hear about your wife’s illness! I was diagnosed with AML 6,5 years ago. My symptoms were fatigue, shortness of breath, flu-like symptoms, chest pain and bruising. I had a lot of chemo to bring me to remission and then had a stem cell transplant. It was a hard journey, but I am still alive and cancer free.

Just like you, my husband and I were dealing with the shock of the diagnosis, uncertainty about the future and had to live one day at a time. I had a great team of hematologists oncologists who took care of me. I also had my faith in God. My family and friends supported us through this journey.

I hope the doctor will have a diagnosis and will start the treatment soon. Please know that there are a lot of us with AML who made it!
