Fibromyalgia and lactic acid

Posted by julbpat @julbpat, Aug 25, 2022

I was surprised to recently run across an article about increased lactic acid in fibromyalgia sufferers. I was searching for this topic because my latest fibromyalgia symptom (always something new, right?) is burning pain in my quads, knees, hips, lower back - as though I had done squats every day! It feels like overuse, and got me thinking about how the lease bit of gentle exercise feels like a 2 hour workout, with terrible pain for hours. So I ran across this research from 2019. Anyone familiar with this?

@julbpat Can you possibly post a link to the article you read? I'm sure there would be a lot of us intersted in reading it.

Thank you the link worked. Interesting theory - now I wonder if anyone is expanding this to efforts to lower the lactic acid levels...?

My thoughts exactly! One of the websites mentioned magnesium supplements for this, but I didn’t see a link to any research. I think if it was that easy to remedy, none of us would be on this forum! I’m not buying any more supplements until I see research - my cabinet has so many half empty bottles!

Can you explain what are you discussing with Lactate acid and migraines? I have lots of my migraines, stomach issues and can’t have dairy products.

This is a discussion of the lactate present in muscles after exertion, which is different than consuming lactose in dairy products. There was some preliminary research done on a (VERY) small group that seems to indicate that people with fibromyalgia or migraines have higher lactate levels in their muscles than those who have neither condition.

When small studies like this are published, people tend to take notice, but they are not necessarily useful to us as sufferers.

Interesting? Yes, as a gateway to further studies, with larger populations, and comparing other variables between those who supper and those who do not. And as a prelude to finding ways to treat or cure.

Useful? Not yet, too small a sample, and no suggestion for how to make any changes, no prescription for us.

What should we do? Be aware and stay tuned for further information. Do not confuse what was tested (ie lactate levels in muscles) with similar sounding terms (ie lactose) Above all, don't let anyone citing a small preliminary study sell you a "cure" of some supplement touted to "remove lactic acid from your body"...wait for the science.

How do you treat your migraines now?
