Tension Myositis Syndrome: What helped you?

Has anyone had experience with Dr John Sarno's book, Healing Back Pain?

Hi @janeym, Are you referring to Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)? Because the majority of people on here are patients just like you, it's important to spell out initials and/or acronyms so other members can better understand the nature of the conversation and engage with you! 🙂

Are you having chronic back pain? Have you had a chance to read the book?

Dr. Sarno's books helped me avoid back surgery decades ago when two orthopedic surgeon's insisted that I'd end up in traction twice yearly, or a wheelchair 'for life' if I didn't have surgery.

I heard Sarno interviewed on a radio program and met some pro football players whose team doctor followed Sarno's recommendations and I took a deep breath and resumed P/T and physical activity. Sarno helped me lose the fear that back pain caused and he made sense. Also he had a really good track record with getting people back to life. I'm sure that there are injuries that really need surgical solutions but mine wasn't one of them and I was relying on bed rest to get better when that was making things worse.

Thank you, @amandaa
Tension Myositis Syndrome, aka Tension Myoneural Syndrome per Dr. Sarno.
I had back surgery 18 months ago but still have spasms. I am a patient of Toronto General Hospital's pain clinic. I am part way through the book on the recommendation of my current therapist.
I hope that helps!

Hi @jan33, Welcome to Connect. I see that you mentioned Tension myositis in Chronic Pain discussion and thought that you might be interested in connecting with @janeym who started this discussion on the condition and mentioned she is part way through Dr. Sarno's book.

Maybe @janeym can share the title of the book that was recommended to her. Have you ordered one of his books yet?

Hi @jan33 and @johnbishop

Of course!
The Dr Sarno book I was recommended is - Healing Back Pain, The Mind-Body Connection.
I bought it from Indigo in Canada, and it's also on Amazon.

I have all of his books and am enrolled in a program for TSM, but I’m struggling with it. Thanks for the referral to Janeym. I will contact her.

I have all 3 of his books and another one by Steven Ozanich, The Great Pain Deception, which is very worthwhile reading. How are you doing with belief in the mind/body concept as you read Dr Sarno’s book.? Some claim all they needed was to read the book. I have persistent headaches. I’m still needing Tylenol, but sometimes a little less, and pain level is a little lower. I did succumb to Botox shots in head and neck about a month ago; nothing changed from those, and I think I am done with all medical attempts to cure the pain.

That's good to hear. I am on to a new psychologist. The relationship is important.
Does anyone find transition times from changing healthcare providers difficult in terms of flare-ups? Any suggestions?

I healed my back pain by working with John Sarno's books. This was after two surgeons told me my back pain was caused by a herniated disc and disc bulges. Both surgeons wanted to operate.

John Sarno's books saved me from a life time of pain. I am hoping some day his treatment becomes widespread. Dr. Howard Schubiner (Unlearn Your Pain), and others are carrying the message forward so there is hope.
