Has anyone in the board had Kyphoplasty surgery? If so, what are the pros/cons?
Thanks

Dr said compression fracture at top of fusion T12. I don’t know when I did this. Has anyone had kyphopladty after a fracture?

Hello @marjo and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am sorry to hear about your compression fracture.

Because there is an existing discussion on kyphoplasty, you will notice that I have moved your post so that you may more easily connect with others. You may find your post here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/kyphoplasty-1/

I see that @leigh17 has come in to share with you. I would also like to bring in @kjs1964 and @contentandwell who may be able to share some additional information based on their experiences.

Has your doctor recommended kyphoplasty?

Hi, @marjo1
In 2004 I fell on my back on a concrete stair landing and broke a vertebra. I had kyphoplasty for it and it did help a lot. My road to kyphoplasty was a rather circuitous route though. My PCP arranged directly with the doctor who does those procedures to have it done. I was feeling great until about two weeks later when I slipped on a slippery floor and wrenched my back to prevent a fall. I suspect I unseated the cement that was put in there because it was never the same after that and now I have a lump sticking out of my back where it was.

The doctor who does kyphoplasty does not see patients, I think he's a radiologist. He is actually renowned in that procedure and does seminars about it. Those procedures are usually done when referred by an orthopedic doctor I believe, but regardless, my PCP couldn't say if I had damaged it. I am pretty sure I must have. So, if you do have kyphoplasty make sure you give it plenty of time to get well seated. Even after the probable unseating of the cement, it was still better than it had been prior to kyphoplasty.

I’ve had 5 fractures in 10 months. I refused the kyphoplasty. My fractures healed. After about 4 weeks used inversion table went down little way slowly and then waited about 1-2 minutes. Came up slowly, hurt some when weight back on bones but after few minutes had great relief on back. I ask my doctor and had his approval. He just advised me to go slow and see… hope this helps a little. I looked up side effects and pro and cons so decided not to do the cement. My dad had it he never was free from all pain. Every one is different. Hope to hear you are pain free if you decide to do it😊

My back just broke one day. I heard it snap but convinced myself it would be okay. The pain was worse every day. 5 days in I went to doctor and then MRI. I could have spinal fusion or cement injection. I had to decide immediately because my doctor won’t do then more than 10 days after the fracture. Some doctors say two weeks.

Has anyone gone through Kyphoplasty surgery to help stabilize a spinal fracture and to restore some of the lost vertebral body height? This is one of the options I am considering now, but I know nothing about the real outcomes and success rate. Can anyone comment on this?
Thanks, Retired Prof.

I'm strongly considering getting a second opinion for my back that was discovered recently at what was supposed to be a CRPS appointment (a whole different, long story lol) and he did an ultrasound on my upper back (secondary issue to CRPS). He found two vertebrae that were compressed but told me if I don't go to physical therapy to cancel the future appointment in 10-12 weeks. Been working out at home and with manners like that I will find someone else with less of an ego.

https://mayfieldclinic.com/pe-kyphoplasty.htm I found this website and want to know from people who have had either minimally invasive surgery to know there results and post-care thoughts, please. Specifically, vertebroplasty & kyphoplasty. Researching doctors in my area most of last week and dialed in, want to be prepared for the conversation. But want to know about the procedures ya'll have experienced. Thank you.

Hello. This was posted to a different question post elsewhere and this link for this forum was shared for someone else.
