Have obs.sleep apnea & use a cpap but wake with pins & needles in arm & hand at least three times a week. Have tried changing sleep positions to no avail…should I see a neurologist?

Hello @aliterpening, Welcome to Connect. I also have obstructive sleep apnea and also wake up often during the night with my arm and hand numb and tingly due to sleeping on my sides. For me it's mostly when I sleep on my left side and I think it has a little to do with the ulnar nerve and I also have carpal tunnel in both hands. So when I wake up I just roll over to the other side and go with the flow. I used to try wearing a wrist brace and it helped some but become more bother than waking up and rolling over.

Here are some references to explain along with some possible treatments and remedies.

"Pressure on your elbow or your wrist could compress the ulnar nerve, creating numb fingers when you wake up. Your ulnar nerve is likely involved if you wake up with numbness in your: Pinky finger, either front or back side."

"Carpal tunnel syndrome and your sleeping position can cause you to wake up with numbness in one or both hands and arms. Other causes of numb hands and arms are cervical spondylosis, peripheral neuropathy, and TOS. Alcohol abuse can also cause it."

I do think if it's really bothersome and persists, it would be a good idea to see your doctor or a neurologist to check for nerve damage or compression as a cause for your symptoms. Have you discussed your symptoms with your doctor?

I use a bipap and have the same issues. I would see your Internist and have blood work done and if something is out of the ordinary see a neurologist. I have neck issues and I think that is what is causing mine and possibly poor circulation. You may want to see pain mgmt dr if you have issues. Wishing you luck.
