Where to stay while having radiation at Mayo Clinic Rochester?

Posted by merrijohnson @merrijohnson, Aug 23, 2019

We are looking for lodging/housing for my brother & family while he undergoes 6 weeks of chemo/radiation at Mayo. We were told by his doctor that free lodging is available for patients receiving radiation, but we aren't having any success in finding any. Any advice is appreciated.

Another suggestion is to ask the hotels, etc., if they offer special rates for Mayo patients. Many lodging facilities near Cleveland Clinic offer special rates and packages. And some restaurants do as well. A friend's parents stayed at aRonald McDonald house in Boston when she was being treated for a brain tumor as a teen at Massachusetts General and commuting from Long Island. She said it was a really nice place. And had free passes to all the museums, most of the Red Six home games and theaters as well. She figures that Mickey D. helped save her life.

@deedee22. You may already know this but when you have cancer treatment you are eligible to apply to stay at Hope Lodge at Mayo Clinic. When you scheduled for radiation therapy were you given an application? If so, you just submit it back to the desk and they will apply for you. Hope Lodge is at no cost.

The Radiation Oncology Dept has a concierge right in the department who can help you with available places to stay.

When I had radiation therapy at Mayo Clinic in Rochester I stayed with a wonderful network of homes and apartments called Serenity House Network.
https://shnrochestermn.com/
The apartments and homes are completely furnished, very clean, and you have a full kitchen and laundry within the home. All the places are very reasonable in cost compared to staying in a hotel. I don't think any of the places are within easy walking distance of Mayo Clinic.

Thank you for the info. I have not scheduled radiation yet, have appointment with oncologist mid September. Just looking ahead of what will need to do. I do know of Hope Lodge but did not know of Serenity house network. This will be very helpful.

Hello, I will be having radiation for TNBC soon at Mayo Clinic Rochester. I had read somewhere on the Connect site of someone owning a condo in Rochester and may rent it out to patients during radiation therapy. I live in Iowa so I don’t want to travel back and forth every day. During chemo it was not bad driving every week.
Would appreciate any information in advance.

We stayed at Staybridge Suites when my husband had radiation September 2021. At first I had booked an AirBnB, which was not refundable. That made me nervous, so I canceled. Thank goodness! During his simulation, the doctor changed him from a 4 week course to a 2 week course.
We chose Staybridge because it was inexpensive, a short walk, and they allowed pets.
We had planned that again for my radiation, originally planned for September.
I just found out I need chemo first, so radiation will be in December. I cancelled Staybridge and will likely stay at a connected hotel. It’s so much easier when it is cold outside!

We stayed t Hope Lodge while I had 5 weeks radiation. We were able to go home weekends since we live 2 hrs away in Iowa. We enjoyed getting to know others on the same journey and still keep in touch with a couple.

Hello
I had radiation in Rochester and stayed at the Hope House free of charge for 5 weeks.
Amazing people, I walked to treatment every morning and worked remote from my room.
Met amazing people on a similar journey.
The Hope house is not determined on income and I so appreciated the beautiful courageous people I met while I was there.
I used the time to rest, heal, and retreat. 5 weeks can be a long time away from your home and loved ones. The Hope House took many stresses away and was on the Mayo campus!
Tremendous community of volunteers and people.
Cancer clear 6-22

Hello @1hockeyjeff, Welcome to Connect. I'm not sure about the pets but I think @artscaping may have more information on the Sandra J. Schulze American Cancer Society Hope Lodge—
Rochester, MN - https://www.cancer.org/support-programs-and-services/patient-lodging/hope-lodge/rochester-mn/about-our-facility.html

You might want to give them a call. How soon is your treatment?

Hi @1hockeyjeff I see you’re coming to Rochester for several months while undergoing treatment at Mayo.

Earlier this summer another member, @lag630 and her husband, had a similar situaion where they needed longterm lodging and wanted to bring their furry family members along with them. They had found a small home to rent near campus that allowed pets. I’m hoping she’ll be able to chime in and give you a suggestion or two.

Have you tried the Conceirge desk at Mayo? They are very helpful in finding accommodations. Here’s their information;
