Stage 3a kidney disease: looking for info

Posted by Ryman @ryman, Jul 2, 2022

I just learned today I have stage3a kidney disease. All my doctor told me was that my kidneys showed dehydration. I am clueless and I remembered I used to come here often. So right now I am just looking for basic info. Thank you. I recall this being a very helpful forum.

Hi @ryman, I see that you posted a discussion in 2017 on Possible low kidney function - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/possible-low-kidney-function/. Here's some basic information on stage 3 kidney disease that may be helpful.

"Stage 3 CKD is split into two substages based on your eGFR:
-- Stage 3a means you have an eFGR between 45 and 59
-- Stage 3b means you have an eGFR between 30 and 44
With treatment and healthy life changes, many people in Stage 3 do not move to Stage 4 or Stage 5."

There is a discussion focused on stopping or slowing the progression of kidney disease --- Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): How do I stop progression?: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/ckd/

Did your doctor offer any suggestions or lifestyle changes that might help you?

Last year, I was prescribed a diuretic called Torsemide. As I understand, it is popular among nephrologists. After some time, I ended up in the Mayo ER because of dehydration. My GFR dropped significantly to 28 or Stage 4 from Stage 3A, and I stopped the diuretic, and fortunately, went back to Stage 3A. So the problem may appear to be not drinking enough water, so consider checking with your doc on your prescriptions and water intake for episodes of dehydration.

@collegeprof Oh, Torsemide! They placed me on that last year, for a short time. It really wreaked havoc on my system, causing the dehydration and severe muscle cramps. My brick-and-mortar pharmacist went over it very carefully, very concerned, and boy he was right! After less than 6 weeks on it, we moved back to furosemide. At this point I am on 180 mgs per day, split between morning and evening doses.

Thank you. i will definitely check these out. My doctor never mentioned kidney disease. She said my kidneys showed dehydration and I should drink more water. I found this in a visit summary that was sent to me.

Many doctors do not tell their patients they have CKD. For 18 years 3 doctors did not tell me. Finally 3 1/2 years ago a new doctor told me, but offered nothing about food or water. I got it all on the Inrternet. I will be 95 in October.

Wow! My sister will be 93 in Dec! I have learned a lot from the internet. I really don’t have a lot of faith in doctors anymore. I wish you well.

Dr only said drink more water

If that is your only problem, meaning, you do not have diabetes, it’s not that difficult to find a diet that is going to please you. Just Google it or someone may post one here or how to find one. On the other hand, in my situation with type two diabetes and stage 3CKD, my instructions are simple. Go to the grocery store. If you see something you want, you can’t have it.
