Hashimoto and weird nerve issues/neck pains

Posted by ctkjose @ctkjose, Jul 27, 2022

For the pass two years I being hunting down some odd headaches, numbness and pins & needles, tremors that radiate from my neck up to may head mainly lower jaw/checks. This symptoms are reproducible with lateral flexion and rotation of the neck when I lay down in bed and sometimes while standing. The right side of the neck is middle painful and hurts when pressed. It seems to be a nerve compression issue. A cervical MRI shows some spinal canal and neural foraminal narrowing but the doctor doesnt think is significant or that it correlates w symptoms, except that this year MRI shows a hemangioma in C6. Physical therapy has done nothing for me. I had very little luck with medications as the ones that sort of work turn me into a useless zombie!

I have a Hashimoto/Goitier thyroiditis for the pass 4 years that has progressed quite aggressively. My last US (june) documents 3 main nodules, on on each lobe both greater than 5cm and classified as TI-RAD 4, and one on the isthmus > than 6cm classified as TI-RAD 5.

Im back with my Endocrinologist and ENT trying to figure this out. It is very frustrating and Im in pain every day.

I was hoping some advice on how to tackle this conversation with my doctor or suggestions on what to do next.

@ctkjose, welcome. This must be concerning. I noticed that you posted your message to the Thyroid Cancer group. Is cancer being ruled out?

I also added your post to the Autoimmune Diseases group and the Endocrine System group to get more responses from people with experience with thyroid issues and with Hashimoto's like @cyclist22 @marye2 @sparshall @ellens and others.

It can be challenging to know what questions to ask your specialists when you don't know what you have. I recommend keeping a journal of your symptoms and possible triggers. Never leave an appointment without asking, "So what is the next step?"

I was lucky. I had a needle biopsy, which was benign last year. If it had been cancer, the thyroid removal is curative without chemo!! I followed up this year, and the nodule has not changed. I am following up the lung nodules in a week or so. Hoping for the same. It was overwhelming last year; but I found some people on a similar journey on this site and it was super helpful.

If anything happens that the nodule grows know that you can have RFA ( radio frequency ablation) so you can keep your gland. There are groups in FB fyi.

Good to know. Right now it isn't affecting swallowing, etc.

I had a larger nodule on my thyroid back in 2007. I was told that Hashimoto's thyroids are pretty bumpy. I did have an ultrasound and the result was negative. I didn't need a needle biopsy.

This maybe out of left field, but one website suggested adherence to a strict ‘autoimmune diet’ as a management technique.

The idea is that since Hashimoto disease is an autoimmune disease - employing an anti-inflammation diet is a good place to start.

An as a Celiac Disease sufferer of 40 years, significant damage to one body organ - the gut in my case- is very likely to create a number of or in worst case a cascade of any damaged organ’s symtomologies - like neurological, kidney, or liver malfunctions that seem to be independent of any original damage. Also having one autoimmune disease frequently results in a second or third AD.

PS - The 1st food to avoid on the list is all grains - in essence getting gluten free. Keep in mind that the full benefit from getting gluten free can take as much as 6 months. So if no other food is avoided removing any contact with grains can be quite powerful.

PPS - Suggest you get your vitamin B12 level tested - B12 plays such an important role in overall body functions, the B12 injections are the best way to go if a B12 deficiency is diagnosed!

Hi, i have something kind of similar, i have been having these inner shakiness/tremors, they are not manifest outside just inside my head and body and nobody knows what it is and the are very debilitating. Been to 11 endos , neurologists, had MRI and MRA, saliva adrenal testing, etc and no luck finding out what it is, I also have nodules but bening. My BP someties goes up but it comes down after like some time and i do not suffer from high BP. I really don't know what it is, i paid $697.00 to a functional doctor in california and after some questions never heard from him again just after a friend went and told him to return my money which he did not wanted, his name is Marc Ryan just in case do't happen the same to anyone. If you find what you have pse share. Thanis

Thanks for your suggestions. I have my next appointment on the 10th. I presume the next step will be FNA, This time I’m seeing a surgeon that specializes in neck and brain, he also does RFA ( radio frequency ablation ) and treats thyroid patients.

Fortunately I do keep good records (spreadsheets 😀) of all tests/blood work, symptoms, triggers, etc.

Jose, did you see the responses you got from other members above?
How did the fine needle aspiration (FNA) go? Any updates?

Have you done some research on the connection between gluten and thyroid issues? Having a food sensitivity test done and eliminating gluten, dairy, eggs might show up as they did with me. Most issues gone and feeling great and thyroid antibodies gone. Still get acid reflux once in awhile but not a real issue anymore. Good luck to you and hope you find answers
