Premarin
My doctor just prescribed Premarin. I did express my concerns as my breast cancer risk is elevated due to family history. I was told the cream will not be absorbed into the blood stream. I am reading articles that indicate the exact opposite. Is this considered safe? I am a bit concerned.
Thank you

As well, @zeta, here is some information with regard to the absorption question you sent to me in private message.

Perhaps you could call your pharmacist to inquire more specifically?
I had a lumpectomy in September, 2021 after consulting with two oncologists and a breast cancer surgeon. Post-surgical genetic testing revealed no genetic anomalies and all three physicians suspect that 2 years of Premarin in my late 40s were, at least,, a contributing factor for the later cancer as there is no cancer in my extended family in any direction.
One oncologist said that some studies are looking into how Premarin might change the way breast cells actually handle estrogen that might make them more welcoming, in a sense, to cancer cells. I wish the science had been clearer when the stuff was prescribed for me.
I don't know whether topical application is safer but all three physicians ruled out things like Estrace, which is also applied topically.
One suggestion is to get genetic testing done. Lack of genetic mutations is no guarantee of a cancer-free future, but a problematic result could be a deal-breaker for any exogenous estrogen.
Where does it come from? And is it from Pregnant Mares.
Hello @southerngirl2 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. According to a quick Google search, that seems to be accurate.
Are you taking Premarin currently?
I was for a week until I found out it is made from pregnant mares who, from the stories I’ve read, are abused daily. Everyone needs to stop using that brand immediately. There are other brands out there. I just got a prescription for Estrace.
