Botox for Migranes
Despite some of you saying not to try Botox Therapy for Migranes, I did anyway! What a mistake! Toxins such as Botox don't set well in my body.
It has been almost three weeks since my treatment. I have been having the worse headaches than before I started. I have been having severe nick and shoulder pain. I get very lathargic and depressed because I have them all the time. Doctor said it just happens.
Can someone give me some feedback as to if they have had the treatment and any side effects you may experienced. I go to bed with a headache and wake up with one.
I won't do another treatment!

Hello @freedonfrom and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am so sorry to read about both you and your mother's adverse reactions to Botox for your migraines. I am sure having your face not move was frightening. Glad to hear you regained feeling!
It is helpful to share both sides of patient's experiences to help others on Connect know what can happen as they are making important health decisions for themselves.
What have you been using for your migraines as a result of the Botox not being an option for you?
I am so very sorry that this happened to you. I just had my second treatment for very bad migraines and my headache disappeared immediately. He also has put me on Qulipta which has worked for me in the past. But I do have to watch out for constipation.
Merry
So sorry to hear about your terrible experience with Botox, I wish I never tried the shots to relieve my migraines I had migraines since I am very young and never thought of getting Botox, but my Dermatologists nurse convince me sine she also suffered bad migraines and said the Botox made them disappear, so I decided to do it, bad decision for me, it does help some. I was hit by a bike 4 years ago and had a headache for a year, it went away after a year, I had botox shots on my forehead last Augh. 2021, and developed a severe pain in my head on the side where I had the headache from the bike accident, it is almost a year and I am still suffering, when I cough I feel like someone is cutting my head open with a knife with no anesthetic, have been to 4 Neurologists and because it doesn't show up on the Cat Scan or MRI none of them have come up with a suggestion, meanwhile I am suffering, very hard to live with continuous pain every single day, much worse than a migraine, I am praying that somehow someone will come up with a cure, although my optimism is waning.

@freedomfrom Im so sorry to hear what you and your mom went through. Very frightening. I have tried 2 rounds of botox with no improvements and exacerbated symptoms for a few days following treatment. My neurologist wants me to try one more round but I don’t think it’s worth it. Thanks for sharing your story. I hope you have found some relief for your headaches.
My adult daughter is considered in the top 2% of horrible migraine patients. She has been medicated like crazy, spent $10,000 (not insurance covered) on surgery and then tried the botox with very little other meds. This has been a game changer for her. She is thrilled! She still has mild migraines but not debilitating as they were before. I only posted this because like all treatments, sometimes it is horrible and sometimes it is the thing that changes your life for the better.
@zoe3 Very good point. Everyone is different and responds differently. My neurologist told me botox is the most successful treatment he’s seen for migraines, so hopefully there are a lot more success stories like yours. It’s great to hear it’s been a game changer for your daughter. Thanks for sharing!
@migizi….I have chronic migraines and have had Botox injections for many years with much success. It took about 3-4 rounds of injections before I had a positive reaction, but it was well worth the wait. I have gone from approximately 18 to 6 migraines a month now! I also follow a regular routine, take preventative and abortive medication, and am gluten free. There are factors I can’t control but I do the best I can….we live our best lives with what we have in front of us and try to keep our spirits positive. Most of the time I am fortunate to be able to do this.. good luck in each person’s migraine journey. It’s a challenging one
I have had the treatment, no side effects, and fewer migraines. Sorry it did not work for you
I tried Botox for my Chronic Daily Migraines several years ago. I think it may have helped a tiny bit the first time but never saw any improvement with subsequent Botox treatments.
Welcome @janetfromberkeley, Thanks for sharing your experience with Botox treatments. Do you still have chronic daily migraines? Have you found any treatment that has helped?
