Anyone else affected by the Low Income Senior Housing Crisis?

Are any of you effected by the lack of affordable housing like we are, We want to move out of Texas. There is a two to three year wait list for our retirement apartment and we will find out in October about how much the rent will go up. More worried this year becase our set of buildings has been recently been bought. I have read frightening stories of new managers wanting twice the rent, other places being closed for remodling and then high rent prices.

I have not looked in Arkansas, have a lot of medicagreat l problems so I need a great hospital and a lot of specialists. Do you need to have great medical care too? The heat, UV index and pollution in the summer is awful in Plano. I went to get lab tests at 3p.m. and could harldy breathe when I returned.

Yes I know it’s awful in the summers there I literally can’t stand to go outside if I’m ever there in hot summer Arkansas is the same . So far I haven’t had many health problems that my doctors can’t take care I’ve only had one surgery and that was a hip replacement but it wasn’t to bad took about 2 months for me to get completely well I hate to start all over finding Doctors if I move there

No, if my daughter and husband move to Arkansas I will be going with them my daughter told her husband if we move there we have to take mother with us because I’m not going to be 10 hrs away from my mother lol so I don’t want to be that far from her either so guess I’ll go

Very good for your daughter. I like her already!! I hope that you can live with them. I have a friend who lived in a trailer and was invited to live with her daughter when she bought a house in Arizona. Now, she is able to see her son's family and all the grandchildren much more. The only problem is driving a long ways to see different medical specialists. I would like to move close to her but I would have the same problen. I wish there was a bus system that could come to your house and take you directly to your medical appointments! Wouldn[t that be a dream?

Hello, Carolee - I really believe the shortage of affordable senior housing is a nationwide problem, as is affordable housing for families, working singles, etc. Where we spend summers in Minnesota, the cost of "affordable" housing is $1500 or more a month for 2 bedrooms, extra if you need a garage. The wait for low-cost senior housing is 3 or more years, and then the building may not be all seniors. My friend's sister on Omaha pays $1400/month for a one bedroom in a senior building - with increases every year.

Depending upon where you are in Texas, you may want to explore different options. We live in far South Texas in an "RV Resort", but we have a small 1 bedroom park model mobile home on a rented lot. These park models are available used, and often fully furnished, for $10,000-20,000. Depending on the park and its amenities, monthly lot rent is $250-$400 plus electric. Many have swimming pools, clubhouses, activities... Our rent is $305 paid monthly or $275 if paid by the year, water, sewer trash and basic Internet included. We pay the electric which ranges from $40-250/month depending on air conditioning and it costs us about $100/year for propane for cooking & heating. Pretty reasonable living, we think.

Some communities are 55 and over only, others welcome all ages. This is not "living in a camper" - these are 350-400 square foot homes, often with a deck, patio, shed, Texas room.

The last thing you would want to do is move to another state, only to find housing just as costly, a waiting list for affordable housing and a residency requirement of a year or more just to get on the list. Add the cost of moving, the need to change insurance, auto tags, driving license and doctors... However, if you are in a high cost metro area, it might be worth exploring nearby small towns.

I am in total agreement. Most of us average people can not find affordable Senior Living.
I live in Florida - that tells you something right there.
Why don’t they have more places with just a Clubroom, an outdoor area to walk and maybe a Pool?
I don’t want to live in a Resort, even if I could afford it.
But that’s all there is for over 65.

The Corporations are making so much money off of these resort living styles and keeping many Seniors “alive”, even if it would not be our wish to live that way.
Remember the Movie “Soylent Green”? In it, if you got ready for a Dignified Death - you went and had one. I am in agreement.

When I was growing up, we lived in a duplexl It was great being next door to a playmate. Too bad that we don't have more opportunities to be with our friends.

Yes I think we have one of those medical buses here you have to call ahead to set it up …. I sure hope I can live with my daughter she and I are so much alike that sometimes we bunt heads but I will just have to keep my mouth shut

Unfortunately Az does not have a good mass transit system. Some say that is why it's such a great place to live, govt is not wasting their hard earned taxes on it. Minnesota should be charging 8000.00 per ride on the light rail but because the govt subsidies it only costs 2.50 per ride and then be careful because of crime.
