Niacinamide

Anyone taking this for anxiety/depression?
Am 8 months off a too rapid taper of 25 years of Paxil and mental health is bad. I’m afraid to start another antidepressant. Niacinamide has been recommended….have you tried it? Dose? Brand?
Thx! PCP has recommended remeron, cymbalta or Effexor and I’m wondering if Niacinamide might help my ruminatings and brain activity.

I’m thinking niacinamide will not help very much with anxiety. Supplements are rarely the answer to anxiety…….I’ve tried many. I do know that the Mirtazapine I’m on has done wonders for my sleep, which helps indirectly with anxiety. Give it a go?

I understand your concern. It sounds to me you have just as much anxiety as you do depression. Listen to your doctor. Try to exercise as well. Good luck.

I’ve decided that I will try cymbalta.
And not read about it anymore.
8 months off a bad Paxil taper and my mental anguish is bad. I walk 1-2 miles/day, eat organic healthy food, guided meditations, etc. crossing my fingers and feeling better now that I’ve made a decision.

Because remeron is supposed to help with depression, sleep AND appetite….doesn’t that mean that it is affecting so many more things in our body than an SSRI that only affect serotonin?

REPLY

It works on histamine receptors, which has a sedating affect, especially at low doses. It also affects different serotonin receptors than most ssri’s. That’s why it’s called an atypical antidepressant . I take it 2 hours before bed and it helps tremendously with sleep. Sleep is important with whatever condition you have. I can’t say it does much else.

Thank you for your reply….
My main concern about remeron is that it’s a histamine 1 antagonist?
So is Benadryl….I tried Benadryl for sleep a few years ago and it made me hyper….would remeron do the same thing? The opposite of what it’s supposed to do?

If that happened to you, maybe it won’t be for you. Sorry. It makes me sleepy.

Do you mind if I ask how long it took the Remeron to kick in and at what dose. I’m 2 1/2 weeks into 30mg and I still wake up at 3 am and haven’t noticed much benefit yet.
