Has anyone tried treatment for diabetic neuropathy?

Posted by beetlejeuse @beetlejeuse, Apr 25, 2022

My dad (age 60) was recently diagnosed with diabetic neuropathy and I have been researching all about it this past week. I know there is no cure but I have run into multiple treatment centers that claim they can help alleviate the pain. My dad lost so much weight recently, I could barely recognize him and it scared me half to death, and he can't sleep through the night because of the pain. Has anyone tried Loma Linda's INF treatment or HFX spinal cord stimulation? The meds given by his doctor don't seem to help much so I am also going to try to give him some medicinal edibles to sleep through the night.

Thank you to anyone who can give me some insight.

Hello @beetlejeuse, Welcome to Connect. I know it must be difficult watching your father in pain and trying to help him find some relief. Thank you for being his health advocate in the search for relief from the pain of diabetic neuropathy.

@sash has posted about Loma Linda's INF treatment in another discussion here - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/nerve-treatment-anyone-tried/. I'm not sure @sash has tried the INF treatment but they may be able to share their thoughts with you.

Here are a few spinal cord stimulator discussions that might be helpful also.

It can really be confusing with all of the advertising and false claims. You might find these links helpful for evaluating information.

John, I'm adding the ProPublica Dollars for Doctors website for people to check what, if any, income their doctors are receiving from med equipment or drug makers. The 'pain industry,' sadly enough, can be very profitable and has had a history of questionable stuff being pushed into the market that fails the test of time.

I write as someone who was told by two orthopedic surgeons that I would be 'in a wheelchair 'for the rest of my life if I didn't have back surgery and intervertebral papain injections a few decades ago.

I got a second opinion (my own) and skipped both treatments. It took 6-8 months of physical therapy and acupuncture to quiet back spasms and I've been fine ever since. According to an article in The New York Times a few years later, papain injections fell out of favor due to (a word we hate to see in ref to medical protocols) unintended side effects. Caveat emptor...

Hi @dmyerse, Welcome to Connect. I am not familiar with Dr Isaac in New York but hopefully some other members may have some information to share. Have you been diagnosed with diabetic neuropathy?

REPLY

No, just neuropathy with intense pain on bottoms of my feet.

There’s word that this Dr Isaac has potential.

Is Dr Isaac part of a neuropathy clinic? I think if it were me, I would want to see a doctor or neurologist and get a diagnosis if possible. Another thing that can cause the type of pain you mention is Plantar fasciitis. Mayo Clinic has some more information on Plantar fasciitis here - https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/plantar-fasciitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20354846

If the neuropathy is associated with diabetes, the best thing you can do is make blood sugar control your first priority. GROAN! That is what always gets said. Diabetes is so hideous it affects all aspects of your health and body head to toe. I’m diabetic and have autonomic & a history of peripheral neuropathy. It has been 40+ years of trying to control blood sugar. Unfortunately things like neuropathy can be irreparable results of uncontrolled blood sugar. Then you are left with trying to find relief from the wretched symptoms. My personal experience is this. I’ll say up front that I’m a Christian and I’ve chosen to put my life in God’s hands, including the health challenges I face. I pray and try to trust God’s will. I also thank Him for and make use of medication, treatments, medical providers etc. that can be beneficial to my situation. My medical history involves a pancreas transplant. After the transplant the peripheral neuropathy resolved. I used to have numbness in my extremities that would advance to tingling, burning, aching pain that was so extreme it interfered with my normal daily activities. It simply went away.
