Prednisolone immuno-suppressant effect v Covid booster protection

Posted by macferse @macferse, Apr 15, 2022

I wonder if anyone has a similar problem. have recently been diagnosed with PMR after 10 years without it. Back on 20 mg Prednisolone and have heard of the immuno-suppressant effects of steroids. Can that effect be quantified. and does it increase with dosage and/or duration of treatment ? I am to have my second Covid booster tomorrow (4th shot in total since start of pandemic in Uk) Will the protective effects of the booster outweigh the undermining of the immune response related to Prednisolone ? If so, how long will that effect last. Grateful for any insights. Thanks

Well I will say my PMR started with the vaccines. There will be no booster for this girl.

Right after I got my Flu vaccine I got PMR. It has been 4 1/2 yrs, and had to retire from work. I took the covid vaccine to go on a cruise and I was unable to walk within an hour of getting the first vaccine. Had to take a prednisone dosing starting with 3 days at 80mgs. It did improve but it will be a slow process back to normal. I got the 2nd covid vaccine 4 weeks later and PMR symptoms were increased in back and arms took 10mgs of Prednisone for 3 days then back down to 5mgs and I have not titrated down yet as the symptoms are still very present. I have just started taking PEMF (pulse electro magnetic field) treatments They have helped a great deal the first 3 consecutively!

@quilterdar - was reading up on pulse electro magnetic field technology since your post is about the third time I have heard of it. Wondering what type of doctor prescribed it for you? It is interesting that they have helped and am hoping that you can expand on how they have helped you.

Since PMR is a type of systemic vasculitis it makes a lot of sense to me that something like pulse electro magnetic field therapy could be a big help. I understand it is used for Olympic and professional athletes.

I believe my PMR started shortly after I had the first shingles vaccine and the senior flu (4 times stronger) on the same day in Sept. 2019. I successfully tapered to zero mg prednisone in 14 months, with no pain or stiffness at all. Then no recurrence after my first Moderna COVID vaccine, but full blown PMR one month later after my second. Started back on prednisone in April 2021. I had a regular strength flu shot in Sept. 2021, and the Moderna COVID booster in Nov. 2021 - each with no problems. I had a mild case of COVID in January this year, which did cause a flare (and I upped my prednisone for a couple weeks). I am scheduling a booster (probably try Pfizer, this time) for next week. I’m 74, and generally in good health, bar PMR. Currently on 9.5 mg of Prednisone.

I did not have a doc order it. A friend works at a clinic that uses a version of it to help those with bladder problems. Its like a chiropractor the medical field does not usually suggest that you go there. So a friend has a machine that he uses to treat horses for rodeos, racing and has good success. The owners also want treatments and have good success and then word got around and he is just busy all the time. Several sports people have come to him and been able to get back into the game.

I hurt so bad after the covid vaccine I wanted to give up, when my friend told me about him! And that very day he made a great improvement in me. He uses the magnawave machine , and I have been doing it now 3 times a week and hope to move out to twice a week. I know people will think me crazy, but I am so grateful for the treatments that last 20-30min. If you live in Montana he has a large circle that he reaches out too

I was tapering successfully (albeit slowly ) and at 3 mg. Had the 3rd vaccination for immuno suppressed people, and went into the worst flareup I have ever experienced. Returned to 5 mg and only now after four months will be reducing alternate days ie 5/4/5/4 etc for Probably a month depending on how I feel. It’s successful than I will reduce to 4 mg daily again for another month

Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry this happened to you. You were doing so well. No more vaxes for me. I'm still at 15 mg. which at least is down from 20. Will be reducing to 12.5 first week of May. Good luck to you. Cheers!

The PMR started after my first Pfizer vax in May 2021 and then blew up after the 2nd vax in August 2021. Was not actually diagnosed until Jan. 2022, after 5 months of agony. Put on 20 mg of Prednisone which helped immensely. Now trying to wean off of it. You would have to pay me $1M at least, to get another vaccination of any kind. Finally was able to drive my car for the first time since last August. I am not an anti-vaxxer by any means. I cut myself quite badly in February and it took 'til the end of March to heal and it's still very tender. I believe healing does take longer with the Prednisone, plus skin is much thinner. Other than that, I don't have the expertise to answer your questions in the detail you might require. If you are not affected by the vaccinations, power to you. Cheers to you m'friend.

I successfully had 3 vaccines i worked as a health director and had close contact to many people and wanted some protection, dose 1 no side effects second dose in bed for 24 hrs 3rd dose in bed for 48 hrs but no residual side effects or increase in PMR or GCA symptoms. I was finally infected by Covid early April this year and it was like a simple cold 1 day in bed. I am glad i had the 3 vaccines and will be having the 4th one year after my first dose i have chosen to wait and have it like a yearly booster rather than just a 4th booster within the one year. Sounds like i was one of the lucky ones.
