Music Helps Me

Posted by Parus @parus, Oct 13, 2017

At times music can be helpful. I like the group Anthem Lights...A new discovery for me when I was perusing youtube. A Capella has always been my thing. I love to sing!!!!!

Hi Paul, welcome. How lovely of you to give the gift of music as your first post to the community. What brings you to Mayo Clinic Connect? How does music soothe or help you?

Colleen, I have been in pain since July, 2019. It is a long story - I will post about it in the chronic pain and/or neuropathy threads when I can put some thoughts together. I have been following Mayo Connect for probably a year now and it has helped my mental state to know that I am not alone.

I thought I would share these songs since they have helped me a little. I like to listen to various podcasts (Clark Howard, Marketplace, This American Life, CarProUSA, etc.), but sometimes music as well. 75% of the songs in the playlist I never heard before. I just thought they might help someone else.

I look forward to seeing your future posts in the Neuropathy and/or Chronic Pain groups when you're ready. Pain and mental state go hand in glove. Music can help. I'm glad you shared what helps you with others. You might be interested in this discussion that @wsh66 started:

Ahh, music🎶. My husband plays guitar and we have had music in our lives since we were teenagers. It has kept us sane and helped us through many a difficult time. I cannot describe the peace of mind and physical healing I get from music. I recommend it to everyone who is suffering or having difficulty coping with health or emotional issues. There are so many genres of music out there. Surely one of them is just right for you. Wishing you happy listening and peace of mind and body. 🎶

Replying to @jimhd. Music has been very helpful to me. In fact my former rheumatologist, now a friend, has been participating in a study involving music and dance, and how it has brought joy to many people. Sometimes when listening to my music late at night with the headphones I sometimes find myself moving with the rhythm of whatever happens to be playing or a song I especially like. It also helps me stay focused when working on my art. I have found lately I am listening to "oldies" which bring back many happy memories of times past. I am not a huge fan of some of the new music because with my hearing impairment, it is next to impossible to understand the lyrics.

Music is wonderful! My husband and I love many different kinds of music; especially patriotic, western and polkas. We really like Lawerence Welk, Guy Lombardo, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles etc. It makes you feel happy and remember where you were when the song was first played. Music is great for good health! There is a wonderful radio show that you can get online called, "Seems like old times." They play music from a specific year all the way back to the 1920's. They also tell you what the news was then and the movies. Really fun to listen to! Plus you learn a lot from it! I didn't know that we had 10,000 planes in the air on "D" Day! No wonder we won WWII!
