Interpreting Bloodwork Results: Should I be worried?

Posted by granniet @granniet, Mar 28, 2022

My WBC count is 11.9 platelets 641 hemoglobin 12,3 d dimer 57. Should I be worried.

Good morning, @granniet Getting blood results and not knowing what they mean is a little disconcerting, isn’t it? I was the same way but after several years of experience with a blood cancer I’ve gotten pretty familiar with the numbers. But keeping in mind I am not a doctor. ☺️

At first glance of your blood results your WBC is just a tick over the normal high range.
Your platelet level, at 641, is also higher than the normal range of 150-450.
Your hemoglobin level is great. And the D dimer test isn’t usually taken unless there’s a suspicion that your blood is clotting too easily. It measures a small protein fragment in the blood.
May I ask what prompted your doctor to order bloodwork? Did you recently have a blood clot or anything that raised the suspicion with your health? With your platelet level running high, that does mean you have the potential for your blood to clot more easily. Have you spoken with your doctor since the results?

I complained in January of crashing fatigue, weight loss, headaches, nausea brain fog and much more. My B12 was on the low end, I started injections because I have celiac, I also have dilated cardiomyopathy. It seemed to help by the third injection I was even worse. She ran the bloodwork with the results I gave you. They don’t know why my platelets are high and thinking I might need to see a hematologist, I haven’t heard but I’m so worried. I do have a CRTD-D for the cardiomyopathy. I have attached the bloodwork just want answers.

We are our worst enemies when it comes to letting our imaginations run away with “what ifs’. ☺️ So please try to relax because from what I’m seeing with your bloodwork, most of your numbers are all really good! That’s encouraging. The results are right down the middle between high and low limits. Are these your most recent blood numbers? Do you know if your platelet level was higher in January?

Because, interestingly, a B-12 deficiency can cause a high platelet level. You’ve had only 3 injections so far the B-12, so that may not be enough time to reverse the deficiency or lower the platelets. The B-12 deficiency explains many of the symptoms you’ve been experiencing.

The slight elevation in the white blood count could be a normal immune response reaction considering the worsening of your celiac disease. That is an inflammatory disease and white blood cell counts can rise in the blood stream when your body is fighting inflammation or an infection. This might all be a very simple combination of those two things.
With your CRTD-D, you don’t want to take any chances with a blood clot issue though. Has there been any discussion of a being on blood thinners?

My celiac is manageable, I’m pretty strict wit it. My cardiologist wants me tested for RA, not sure why. I just got a email that they are referring me to a hematologist. Maybe they’ll give me answers, I feel so horrible.

Considering your elevated platelets it’s not a bad idea to have a visit with a hematologist. I’m so sorry you’re feeling miserable. What are some of your symptoms, if you don’t mind sharing?

Fatigue m headaches m joint pain, extremely cold hands, eyes hurt, weakness in legs sometimes wobbly, night sweats, feel shaky inside, brain fog, I get breathless just talking or walking, anxiety, it seems like a lot, but miserable.

Oh goodness, that is a lot to have going on at one time. No wonder you’re miserable! I can understand your cardiologist suggesting being tested for RA. Some of the symptoms can be similar. But if you’re seeing a hematologist first they’ll likely have another battery of blood work done as well and hopefully get to the bottom of your symptoms. I sure hope you get some relief soon. Will you let me know, please?

That is a possibility too. There are a number of other tests that aren’t on a general CBC which the hematologist will likely order to get a full blood workup. Some of your symptoms could be explained with the Vit B-12 deficiency. Were your potassium and magnesium levels checked?

The only bloodwork done so far is what I sent you. I figure they will run most everything, yes I’ll let you know, my appointment is this Friday.

Thanks so much.
