Has anyone had a tight band feeling after total knee replacement?

Posted by mhort1213 @mhort1213, Feb 28, 2019

I am 8 weeks post TKR and have had this very tight band around my knee since week one. My Dr at 6 wks says it is normal and will go away. Has anyone else had this and did it go away and when?

Thank you so much. That gives me hope.

I had a fall in 2018 and broke my right knee and had to have a plate and screws put in. After surgery and therapy I had the tight band feeling and had it for 3 years. I had the shots but they did nothing. In 2021 I saw a new dr and he did a TKR on it in June. I have the tight band feeling again. Today my therapist and I both agreed that I’ve reached a plateau. It’s not getting any better. I have good ROM and no problem walking but having to stand too long hurts. Sitting too long with my knee bent hurts and very uncomfortable so I have to have it straight and propped up. My tightness is below and around my knee and goes into my calf sometimes, mostly if I’m standing too long. Like when fixing dinner. I’m leary that this is never going away. I’m not able to go down steps very good and when putting on pants I can’t bring my leg up high enough so have to lean against something to keep from falling. I don’t know what to do. When I broke it I could at least go up and down stairs no problem and could put pants on no problem either.

Tried to find a physical therapist that is qualified to do dry needling it might help. It is not comfortable but gets tight muscles to relax.
Post TKR I do bike, stretches, massage with rolling pin, balancing exercises as well as squats and endurance exercises am10 months post op and extremely happy with results to date.
Had dry needling before surgery and a couple after surgery but don’t need them now for my knee
Good luck

That’s all the exercises I have been doing. Haven’t tried the dry needling, but I’ll keep that in mind to try also. Thanks so much.

I had surgery in august I felt that tight band immediately after waking up…… I must say I am still working on tightness…. The first few months had no range of motion at most 40 bend could not straighten out ….went to water therapy and mfr up to 85- 90 bend completely straight……the combination very helpful…. Best of luck to you

Hi! I had surgery 8weeks ago. The tight band started 4 days ago and I had no clue what was going on so I started reading. Apararently it has to do with nerves which are cut during surgery and now they are regenerating. Nerves heal very slow and this is what we are dealing with. I will continue to excercise knowing that there is nothing wrong with my surgery and I have to keep pressing on and trusting the Lord!

My tight band correlates with the incision-cause numb area. No change in tightness or size of numb area a year after surgery.

Well I broke my knee in 2018 and had the tight band feeling for three years. That’s why I had the TKR, but I still have it. So I don’t know if that’s right or not. It can also be scar tissue. I also have numbness on the right side of my incision. I don’t think one has to do with the other. Anyway, I’m continuing to do my exercises here at home. I also have an appointment for a myofacial release massage that I’m gonna try. I’m also trusting in the Lord for this to go away. All things are possible through him!!

Sorry to hear that...we can only continue to do what we can to make it better. This gives me a reason to pray for all of those going through the same think...I will post if I find something that will make it better for me...till then!!!

I have. Unfortunately five months out I still have it. The doctor gave me a cortisone shot and it helped for a little bit. Now it's worse. Sorry I hope that your doctor doesn't dismiss you like mine have
