Having trouble with clogged ears: Any ideas?

Posted by ktgirl @ktgirl, Mar 25, 2022

I've been having trouble with my ears being clogged for a few weeks. I don't have a sinus infection or anything like that. I have Sjögren's and a number of other autoimmune diseases. I've been using Nasacort but that helps for a little while but then I comes back. Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks

Hi @ktgirl, My wife has had clogged ears every once in awhile and she normally just goes to a local health clinic and gets them cleaned which has taken care of the problem. I also found this article that you might find helpful.

@ktgirl Yes, i had a problem with clogged ears. I tried everything. Finally went to the doctor and he found completely impacted wax with he was able to remove. He also said there is nothing i could do to prevent the wax buildup and I wouldn’t have been able to remove it myself. I have an autoimmune disease, also. In my case, there was no connection. I suggest you call your doctor and get your ears back!

I guess I'll have to give my doctor a call. I don't have the best luck with doctors. When I call my rheumatologist his nurse just tells me to.call my primary doctor when he is the prescribing the meds. I see a nurse practitioner for a primary care doctor and never see the doctor she works under. It's kind of frustrating. I wondered if the Sjögren's could cause problems because of the dryness.
Thanks for the help Becky and John.

@ktgirl always start with your primary care doctor or NP. They are considered the ‘gatekeepers’ of your healthcare and they know you best. They can make the necessary referrals for you. Think positive!!

Yeah I'll either go to urgent care tomorrow or I'll call my NP on Monday. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm recovering from a knee replacement which is 5 weeks out so that's going pretty good. Thank goodness!

People withb sjogrens have eustation tube disfunction . This eustation tube problem comes from inflammation in the tube . Air and fluid gets trapped and if bad enough will break your ear drum to equalize the pressure in the middle ear. I have had to get tubes in my drums to keep the pressue from building up,and causing hearing difficulty

Hi, I suffer tinnitus and daily my left blocks. It was going on for a few years. It was uncomfortable. Sometimes a netti pot would unplug it right away. I went to an ENT and he put a tiny scope up my nose into my throat right in the office. Very quick procedure. He did it up each nostril. He found the blocked ear had a eustachian tube flap that was sticking. I had a balloon procedure done and it worked. It may last 6 months or a few years, no guarantee. It was a very fast procedure. It’s similar to scheduling an endoscopy. I think it lasted 15-20 minutes. You can google it or find the balloon procedure on utube and watch it. That’s my story. Not sure what your diagnosis will be. Their was no reason why it happened to me or if related to tinnitus but it’s better not feeling like I live under the sea every day.

Thanks for this information. I was just about to call my ENT, but had no idea anything could be done. Not up for surgery. Your experience is quite hopeful!

Hello @mothermary1
I also found the information about the balloon procedure to be interesting. Was the procedure done under anesthesia or were you awake?

REPLY

Hi, under anesthesia. It’s a very fast procedure so it’s brief. It’s like having an endoscopy or colonoscopy but shorter time. No discomfort at all. Joanne
