Unknown Body Odor
I need help! I've got a bad odor coming from my body, that I can't smell. Yes it's hard to explain. Doctors think I'm making it up. In public people avoid closeness, coughing, holding their noses, avoiding me at all cost. I'm a prisoner in my home. Don't venture out unless low on food and pick times to do it. I'm constantly shamed.im healthy, clean. Homes clean, I can't explain. Have spent last two yrs going to every type doctor to no avail. My family can't smell it either. Has anyone heard of this?

Hi @vanz, and welcome to Connect. I'm glad to see you found a group that you're interested in connecting with. When did you start noticing the body odor? And, are there certain times of the day that you notice it more than others? I know you mentioned that you've tried a lot of methods to try and cure it, but I found some information on lifestyle and home remedies from Mayo Clinic (http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sweating-and-body-odor/basics/lifestyle-home-remedies/con-20014438).
I hope that you and @deprest, or others in this group, are able to connect on your experiences.
I also want to add that if at any point you start to feel like you may consider hurting yourself, please call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline https://988lifeline.org for immediate help. Your safety is the most important thing to us.
Hi @alysebrunella . im guessing mine is sweat triggered. so it gets worse as the day progresses. every doctor has dismissed it saying "theres nothing to be done" or "its normal" but if antiperspirants and deodorants dont help me one bit, theres no way its normal. thanks for ur concern

Hello, @mucho3 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. That must be very hard with people complaining about a body odor you can't smell on yourself, and it's understandable you are looking for solutions.
This is a bit older discussion thread, but I'm hoping members like @petere @deprest @margareto will return and offer some input on dealing with this odor that you are wondering about coming from your feet. I'd also like to invite @peabody88 @massie @gailb @johnbishop into this discussion for their insights.

@mucho3, you mentioned you sometimes think of suicide related to this issue. How are you feeling now?
Hello, @mucho3 – I'm really sorry you are having to go through this type of problem. I know not everyone has the same sense of smell or ability. Some are gifted with a nose that can smell all kinds of things and some of us (me included) not so much. It might be worth getting checked out by your doctor or maybe try some of the home remedies suggested by @lisalucier. Bravo for you of looking for answers and being an advocate for yourself. I would like to add my welcome to Connect and hope you continue to search for answers.
Please keep asking questions and let us know if you find an answer.
@mucho3
Welcome to this wonderful community on Mayo Connect. I'm sorry about your body odor issue. My son had the same problem with his feet as you seem to. I also recommend seeing a foot doctor. One of the main problems my son had was his choice of shoes. He's vegan and was wearing shoes that were made of materials other than leather, usually plastic based. His cloth shoes were also a problem because they were well used (old) and absorbed his sweat which spoiled and the odor became sickening. He couldn't smell it either. Since your problem is relatively new, it's probably your shoes. I'm assuming you bathe on a daily basis.
So, my recommendations:
- always wear cotton socks ("Bambas" brand are great; I just got some)
- buy new shoes that are either leather or materials other than vinyl/plastic
- throw away any shoes you are currently wearing as they may have bacteria in them that won't go away even with
washing
- use a foot powder in your shoes.
Try those things as you await a doctor appointment. You might also try deodorant on your feet. Good luck. Please keep in touch and let me know if any of my recommendations is helpful. We're here for you.
