Help: Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSHL) - very scary
I just got diagnosed with hearing loss by My ENT. Woke up and hearing was gone in my left ear. I'm being treated with oral and ear injected steriods. Becoming anxious and panicked about recovery. Hoping someone can offer advice or someone who has story of recovery success. I went to an urgent care the day this happened ,the doctor gave me oral steriods and I followed up the next day with an ent. At this moment I feel the sense of sound but its not clear also hear rapid tones , pops and clicks. Previously I heard nothing at all . hope this means the trearment is working.

Having been in your same position about eight months ago, and have gained back absolutely no hearing in my right ear from SSHL, I would still recommend the steroid injections but you need to do those ASAP.
I found two people who went through that hyperbaric chamber treatment. They both are found no improvement with this and would not recommend it. I also have read there are no substantial medical findings That support that success of this treatment.
i'm sorry, this won't be particularly helpful, but yeah, it's a whole grieving process honestly. everything i heard after experiencing sshl was that after 3 days, it was too late to do anything. my ENT put me on two weeks of high-dose steroids anyway, to no avail. my sshl came with a whopping tinnitus onset so it all took getting used to. but over time you will. cochlear implants are definitely an option to regain that hearing though. i've elected to go with the bicros hearing aid which brings what you're missing from the deaf ear over to the good ear. i wish you luck on this journey.
My left ear is normal. I continue to have a total loss of hearing in my right ear. Thank you for your feedback.
Thank you.
You may want to look into a bi cross hearing aid system in time. With a bi cross, a receiver on the deaf ear transmits sound to the good ear. It helps a great deal with single sided deafness.
Good to hear that your left ear is 'normal'.
Thank you so much for this thread! JUST what I hoped to find! It’s a story but I KNEW there was a likelyhood of improved hearing aft er a loss associated with trauma and stress, but even doctors here seem to be willing to nothing but sell hearing aids to older people, without even checkign for more intelligent approaches. My hearing has improved as spontaneously as it failed recently and so I tried again - encouraged and joyful. I have some true knowledge and insight to hearing issues and so I felt disappointed in my care options till I found this site…..all sorts of help paths have opened up …wish me luck on this journey and accept my good wises for you1
Thank you. I went to the House Institute of Hearing Loss in Orange County. The ENT essentially confirmed the original diagnosis and recommended that I wait another five months to see if my hearing returns on its own. If you think of any additional suggestions, please let me know. I will keep you updated if my situation improves. Thank you again.
Thank you for your input. Much appreciated. I did discuss the cochlear implants option with my ENT. He feels going down this path now is premature. He wants to see if my hearing returns in the next five months. Thankfully, my left ear is normal. If you think of any other treatment options I should consider please let me know. Again thank you for feedback.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for improvement. That you have one ear that is normal is great. I don't have that, but I do pretty well with hearing aids.
Have it improved I have the same problem but I only have one ear
