Anyone been to Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL?
Has anyone been to the Jax Mayo Neurology department to see a neurologist and if so what was your experience and feedback regarding the Neuro doctors?
I have a first time appointment at this Neurology dept at Mayo in March with a Neuro doctor. Any feedback is appreciated. The Mayo clinic in Jacksonville is far from my house and with gas and food expenses, needing to get a hotel room etc it will be a very costly trip for me.

I am also a patient at Mayo Jacksonville , it is a great place. The doctors and nurses take the time to listen and talk to you. They are always also available through your patient portal to answer questions. It is a very calming campus. In between appointments I like to go for a walk. Best wishes!
Did you have to be seen by the General internal medicine first? How do you get in? Rochester denied my application to be seen at GIM?
I’m from CA seeing a neurologist and rheumatologist.
@nancy22, your first step to seeking an appointment at the pain clinic in Jacksonville, is to read the information on this website: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

Holiday Inn Express and suites has a shuttle bus.
Thanks! I decided to rent a little air b&b apartment that was in walking distance to downtown. My daughter could do some activities while I was tied to my bed for two days.
The apartment was only 20 minutes drive away from the Mayo campus.
First FL visit Neuro Eval Tuesday 9/7
I confirmed my appointment in Jacksonville today for Tuesday morning. I have a nurse appointment and then an evaluation appointment with a Neurologist. Two things.
First, my medical condition only allows me to be vertical/upright for a few minutes before I black out. Monday I will call the clinic so I’m hoping they’ll accommodate me as my local home doctors have.
Second, should I expect to stay in town for tests and such following an evaluation appointment? My detailed appointment letter doesn’t specify anything further than the appointment. I have family in Jacksonville so this isn’t a hardship but I have children at home so need to ensure they are cared for.
Thanks in advance!
Autumn
Welcome, @autum07. Fantastic that you reached out to prepare for your first visit to Mayo Clinic neurology in Jacksonville, Florida. You'll notice that I moved your question to this existing discussion where Joanne asked a similar question and got so many helpful responses. See :
- Mayo Neurology group: Anyone been to Mayo in Jacksonville, FL? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mayo-neurology-group/
I moved your message so you could read the previous posts and easily connect with fellow Mayo FL patients, like @ees1 @bethanderson49 @nancy82415 @ronstahl12 @lindes @ess77 @bsrice, to ask them questions as they come up over the weekend as you prepare for Tuesday's visit. Many of them have been to neurology specifically and can give you a good picture.
It's a good idea to call ahead and let them know about your need to not be vertical for more than a few minutes. The entire team and staff will accommodate you. Keep in mind that Monday is a holiday. You might put a message on your patient portal. Did you create an account yet?
Having your account created helps organize your appointments etc while on campus too.
At your evaluation appointment, the team will determine what further testing and appointments may be necessary. Usually these will be accommodated same day or within a short period of time. It might be wise to arrange for your children at home for a couple of days just to be sure.
Hi Autumn, yeah that first letter doesn't give much information. Colleen is correct, set up you Mayo portal and things will fill in as the time gets closer. Your initial appoint will be there, and then 7 days before some questionnaires will appear. I had my initial appt with Dr Rozen, in Feb this year, after seeing him, he requested several tests and appointments with other doctors. We scheduled our hotel room for the week and let him know that we were only there for 4 days. The staff communicates with the other groups so effectively (really wish other systems worked as well as the Mayo), that I was able to get in all the appointments that week. Then scheduled follow ups once the results were finalized, which also were extremely fast. It is all driven by the first initial contact and where they think you should be seen next. Best of luck.
Hi @autum07
I am also a patient at Mayo Jax. I have also been a patient at Mayo Rochester. Both places I have seen different specialties but all seem to be the same for care plans. Your patient portal is a great asset, I have never seen an organization with a more patient friendly portal. Many days before your appt you can see your appt schedule and check in for your appt through your portal- this can help you know what to expect and prepare for. Most of my visits to Mayo haven’t resulted in additional test that required extra days- but do not rule that out- after seeing you in person additional test may be needed- the few times more tests were ordered for me- I was able to do it either that same day or next day. Mayo is very aware that many patients travel to them so they try to respect that time. I did recently move to Jacksonville so it is much easier now for me to travel there obviously- but even then- my appt next week- they still worked to schedule all my testing to avoid me coming back multiple days. Don’t know if this helped at all- but I have been to several big hospitals- there is no place like Mayo, hopefully you will find the answers you seek. Best wishes.

As others suggested, look at letter you received and see if any information about setting up a portal account.
Not sure when you say can not be upright, but wheelchairs are available. Just ask when arrive.
As @bsrice mentioned, there may be questionnaires that can be filled out ahead of time. This saves time when you arrive. If not filled out ahead of time, the desk attendant will ask you to fill out when you arrive either via paper or on iPad. It is so much more efficient if do as much as possible ahead of time.
Also, pack all your medications so when nurse initially meets with you she can enter into your medical records.
Two other items,
- they will ask for your medical insurance cards to scan it. You probably have already provided info to Mayo, but desk attendant may ask for them to scan it.
- If this is first appointment, they may also ask if want to sign a "Authorization to Disclose Protected Health Information to Family and Friends" form. Due to HIPPA, they will not talk to anyone with out your approval. So if you want any of your children to have authority to talk to a provider, you will need to sign one for each person. Just need to know their full name and birthday.
Safe travels and good luck at your appt.
