Playing Hooky - taking a day or session off of nebulizing

Posted by thumperguy @thumperguy, Feb 13, 2022

I’ve tended to be a “Dudley Do Right” about faithfully maintaining adherence to a twice daily schedule on the nebulizer using 7% saline solution on the strength of its reputation for its capability to kill or diminish the strength of MAC infections. This evening however I’m “hookin’ out”; living dangerously.
Hope I “get away with it” and don’t end up taking a worse “Thumpin’, Don

@thumperguy

Twice daily 7% nebbing sessions have so successfully controlled fever accompanied flare ups that I’m ready to see if I can get away with one daily session.

I’m sharing my latest ..switched from Omron nebulizer to pari vios. It’s like I’ve never been nebulizing this whole year. Wow! It’s going to take sometime to get used to.

crepass, your post is worth at least a “yuk yuk.” Thanks for helping us . combat the “drudge” factor that accompanies nebulizing Don

Don, do you cough when you do nebulize? I do cough a lot and I feel like the saline is so strong. I used 7 percent and do 2x a day. Thanks for listening. Cila

Hi Don, I am really going out on a limb and have stopped the nebs and just do dry salt inhaler. I have cavitary MAC and it isn't getting better. The last time I had MAC I was not told about nebs. This time, I was told to nebs twice a day and low and behold the cavity showed up and got bigger. Anyway, I go to Mayo next week and will see what they have to say about surgery. I guess the burning question is, does the nebs really help? or does it not help when there is a big hole in my lung that festers the bugs? Only time will tell..... good luck to us all. Carolyn

Hi Carolyn. May I ask who you are seeing at Mayo and what kind of surgery you are having? I hope your visit goes well.

Hi Terri,
I see Dr Clain and since my last visit the cavity in my lung has collapsed and disappeared. Also, the other nodules have reduced in size and my lung function has greatly improved. So now surgery is cancelled. Thanks for asking.

Not Don, but he must be hiding somewhere around here.
I'll try to answer - 7% saline is meant to cause you to cough, to bring up the mucus that provides a breeding ground for bacteria in our lungs. As I write this, I am intermittently nebbing and stopping to cough. My "goal" is 10 puffs before I stop to cough. When the saline is gone, I will intentionally "huff cough" for at least a couple minutes more. I find standing up and bending from the waist as I do this gets the most crud out the fastest. After I finish, I will drink a big glass of water and sip some throat-soothing tea.
Afterward, I will cough off and on during the day. If it gets annoying, I will do another round of "huff coughing" to see if I can get rid of more crud. After 4 years my body kind of tells me what I need to do from day to day.
How long have you been using the saline? What do you do afterwards to get the mucus out?
Sue

Thanks Sue, I’ve been using saline for 5 yrs now. I was at NJH and the respiratory lady over told to huff and cough after I did my Aerobika. Well, I did all that but Now I got lazy and don’t do anything anymore. I just do saline, Levalbuterol and the smart vest last Aerobika. I just send sputum Wednesday hopefully is good. Thanks Sue !
