Taking anticoagulant for Afib, need total hip replacement: Concerns?

Posted by jazmania12 @jazmania12, Jan 23, 2022

I am taking Elquis for Afib and need to have a total hip replacement surgery. Does anyone know of any concerns with surgery and Afib, I'm rather nervous as I am new to Afib?

Hello @jazmania12 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Having Afib and then facing surgery is an understandable concern as a patient. Can I start by asking if you've shared your concern with your surgeon and/or care team and if they have offered anything back to you?

Hello Amanda,
Actually, I have not had a discussion concerning Afib. So that is what I will do next. I've been in the process of getting a second opinion as it relates to the surgery. Additionally, I've a history of blood clots and that was the concern I discussed. I guess it over shadowed the Afib. But I will address my concern about Afib and see what will be said to my concern.
Thank you much,

Hi joann2022 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.
Are you currently waiting at a Mayo facility or are you at another facility?
Is it a medical reason that they are keeping you in the hospital this long prior to doing the ablation?

I REALLY COULD USE SOME HELP WITH THIS

My mother has continuous afib and is on Coumadin (Warfarin). Years ago she had an endoscopy and was off Coumadin for 5 years without "bridging" with a short-acting blood thinner, and had a stroke. This was a medical error, basically negligence.

Make sure your blood thinner needs are "bridged," probably with Lovenox. That is used temporarily after your surgery. Talk to your doctor and make sure you know which doc is bridging you. With my mother, the GI doc thought the PCP was ordering it and vice versa.

Good morning Peaches, I am not quite sure what you asking. Do you need to have surgery & suspend your coumadin or other blood thinner?
