How can I be less anxious about my MRI with contrast?

Posted by cookiepic @cookiepic, Jan 7, 2022

I am scheduled for an mri on the 17th. I am nervous about laying there for 45 mintues or more with Degenerative disc disease with my neck but also the contrast element. Is it safe? I'm a Google reader which is bad so l have read pros and cons.

Well today l went and had my mri and l did just fine. After losing a night's sleep and being very anxious it went well. Technician was very kind and keeping me calm. It took 30 mintues total. Thanks to everyone that made me feel better with all your advise.

Fear is a difficult emotion to conquer. Uncertainty is unsettling. I’m glad you did it! You can be proud of yourself.

I have been dealing with fear and anxiety about the cervical facet joint injection I’m scheduled to have on Jan. 25th.

I realized my fear is just thoughts and I can change those thoughts. I am confident of the doctors skill, it will be done in a hospital, it’s not surgery, it may help my pain and I have made a decision to try this for some pain relief.

It may help, it may not, it may make it worse, but I am going to do it! I think once I made the decision I could prepare myself. Wish me luck!

I wish you the best of luck and l send my prays. God is good and l believe he helps us.
Fear and anxiety is the worse. Today someone says to me now l have to worry about the results of my mri. My first thought was fear and anxiety. Then l sat back and said this is why l went for the mri to get results so no I'm not allowing my anxiety to get to me.
I know you will be fine. You made your decision and all any of of us can do is be hopeful that it helps with whatever we decide to do. Please lmk how it went.

As far as sleep l probably will sleep better tonight. I never nap but today l think after taking xanax as well as coming down from high anxiety l did nap today. Once again thank you a million times for you kind words.

Cookie pic - Thank you SO much for replying. I will let you know how it goes and if it helps. It’s so nice to have this site with All Ya’ll to give encouragement as we share our hopes and fears.

I had to stop most supplements and my anti-inflammatory (celebrex) today, 5 days prior to the procedure, tumeric had to be stopped 14 days ahead. I will be having more aches and pains over the weekend, but it’s only for 5 days and I can start again as soon as the procedure is over.

I called the hospital to make sure I was doing everything I was supposed to do so I would be good to go on Tuesday. I also called the doctor’s office again and the scheduler told me “it’s not that bad”. Forgot to ask her if she had ever had one. She told me they would offer me sedation when I got to the hospital. The doctor had told me that she would provide Valium to help me relax. So I am READY!

Fingers crossed it helps! I

My advise is to stay calm and don't be afraid. Trust in your doctor that is doing the procedure. Before you know it it will be done. That's what l tell myself the day before I'm getting something done. I sit and say by tomorrow it will be done and I'll be fine. And also through your help and others that's how l dealt with my mri. I have faith in you and God you will be just fine. Don't understand estimate your strength.

I choose a standing MRI and if I need regular, I will surely need a medication to knock me out somewhat. Why can't people be put to sleep during this procedure??? Men can go to the moon, but this is a no, no......why???

Hi Becky,, I had that kind of fear for MRIs of my head and had a companion go with me.....just knowing they were sitting outside and could hear everything was helpful. Valium has also been a choice. And then I bought an MRI kit which includes coverage for my eyes. I also asked the technician to make absolutely sure that my body inside the hood would never touch the material. Then I would tell myself I was not confined or some other dream. Good luck. You will be fine.

You've got the strength..........I've seen it many times.

A cousin of mine that lives in Texas was sedated for her mri. I don't know if it's something that each state decides on for insurance purposes. I was going to do the standing mri but went for the open sided one. I do get anxiety with the closed one but this one was all open and l didn't get anxious.

I lived in KY. and went to Nashville, TN. for my arm. I guess it doesnt work for every ailment/situation and they are far/few in between also. Most doctors know where to go to get in on one.
