What can I do when in a gastroparesis flare?

Posted by lily21 @lily21, Mar 8, 2021

What can I do when in a gastroparesis flare? Even water is painful to drink. I am waiting for a call from Mayo GI clinic. Waiting is hard. I do take an acid reflux med, and Tums though the day. I also take zofran as needed, but thats not working either. Ive had a flare for 3 days.

@mcott

Is there anyone familiar with this condition who can answer a few questions for me?

My husband has gastroparesis and is suffering with nausea, an inability to gain weight, and feeling full all the time. Doctors want to place a GJ feeding tube but he is not on board with that. He is otherwise healthy and seems to have developed gastroparesis after esophageal surgery. Is there anyone in this group living with a gj tube who would be willing to share their experience?

Hi @fatz52 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Sorry to hear your gastroparesis is getting worse. I moved your post to a current discussion about gastroparesis so that I could introduce you to members like @mcott, @mgeller604, and @brendaharvey who have had experiences with this illness.

How long have you been diagnosed and what symptoms are worsening?

I have this. Physical Therapy in Louisville,Ky.. helps me more than anything. It is a very bad thing to deal with.
Wish I could get more help.

They taught me exercises to strengthen stomach wall muscles. Here are some pictures. I am now off my Med and using a Milk of Magnesia Saline Laxative (a small amount before bed) along with 2 tablespoons of the recipe they gave me.
Belly breathing is so important. The massage they taught me on the 1 st appointment was a game changer.
I was constantly constipated. Didn’t even know to breath out with my mouth wide to produce a BM!

Thank you so much, Brenda! The weird thing is that my husband has not suffered from constipation, but these exercises will be invaluable should constipation arise. I am so happy to hear that you are doing better and very grateful that you have shared your experience. Best, Mickey
