Just approved: Evusheld for the pre-exposure prevention of COVID-19

Posted by lizzy102 @lizzy102, Dec 10, 2021

Does anyone have any more information on this just-approved by the FDA treatment for immunocompromised people? From what I am reading, it seems very exciting. Boy, what I wouldn’t give for a bit of protection from the scourge virus!

Thank you so much! I am going to share these with my doc.

Hi @athenalee 💃 Yes, my transplant nurse said the hospital is developing guidelines and I will be notified through the patient portal when available.
On the latest John Hopkins Transplant webinar, the doctor explained that the vaccine is a superior protection, but for patients that the vaccine does not work, Evusheld is the next best thing to provide some "first line of defense" antibodies. (no T and B cell action)
John Hopkins has a clinical trial going on to see if they can have better success with the vaccine by lowering the immune suppression and then give the vaccine. I will be curious to see the results.
Did you message your transplant nurse for their approval on Evusheld? Have you heard anything more about Evusheld?

I received approval. They’re doing them at Lahey, but suggested I try in S. Vermont first. They said if I need a letter from them, they’d provide it. Now I just have to get my PCP to follow through.

Has anyone in this transplant group tried Evusheld? It’s given in 2 shots and it supposedly boosts your antibodies. If you have, have you had any side effects?

Hi Nancy,
You'll notice that I moved your question about Evusheld to this existing discussion in the Transplants group. Have you had Evusheld?

No. My transplant team just offered it to me. I was wondering if anyone had taken it. I want to know about side effects. Thanks for putting me in the correct group.

Hi Nancy - I’m curious about which state you live in. I’ve been trying to get the Evusheld treatment in Illinois but I’m not having any luck. My PCP wasn’t aware of the treatment and the last I heard from my transplant team at Mayo Rochester, they were waiting for further direction from their infectious disease specialist. I’d rather get the Evusheld treatment than a 4th vaccine as directed by my transplant team in a letter yesterday. Is anyone else having any luck finding the treatment?

I live in Grand Rapids MI. I have not gotten vaccinated because so many people have gotten neuropathy or had theirs worsen. I have neuropathy and don’t want to chance it getting worse. Plus I have natural immunity from a bad case of Covid in Nov 2020. I usually have my antibodies checked every couple of months and I’m still positive. I’m speaking with the pharmacist at my transplant center this afternoon. I’m very unsure about getting it. I’ll post what she has to say.

I had a talk with the pharmacist about Evusheld and I have decided not to take it right now. They are only offering it to people who get the infusion Belatecept. Or have cancer. I am eligible but they are uncertain about side effects, heart issues being one of them. I had some heart issues when I had Covid so I decided not to get it. I was told they only have 30 doses at this time but that at least one other hospital has doses too. They’re hoping they will continue to receive more doses.

Thank you for sharing this information! I’ve reached out to Mayo Rochester and was advised to get both the 4th vaccine shot and the Evusheld treatment when it’s available in my state.

A friend of mine received it. She’s on immunosuppressants for autoimmune diseases. She had no side effects.
