Pain on right upper buttock cheek that does not radiate
Hello, I have had a pain on my upper buttock cheek for a while now (a could of months at least. The pain does not radiate down my leg and I can sit comfortably. But It does not go away. It feels worse when I get up in the morning and I feel particularly stiff. Any ideas? Thanks!

Welcome, welcome, welcome, @simona70. You have landed on Connect where 110,000 other folks including me have found helpful information about conditions and creative suggestions about treatments. I have just gone through a year of sharp rather debilitating pain in my right buttock if you will. It got me wondering and worrying......what if it is this, or what if it is that? I made my own diagnosis of a hip issue that would require surgery. Much to my happy surprise, I was told by my knee surgeon that it was one of five bursas in that area and appropriate injections just might keep it under control.
Can you share with me what has been done to help you understand the cause of your pain and discomfort? Have you had imaging done including an MRI? Perhaps you have also tried using heat to calm the area on your buttock cheek. Moist heat might be even more helpful.
Can you further describe what "particularly stiff" means to you? Is it a sharp pain that locks up that area? Would you describe the pain as what might be called "bruised". Have you had a fall? Overused the area? Let's see what other members might just recognize your symptom.
How would you classify the pain......does it come and go or just hang on to the same area? Do you have difficulty getting comfortable for sleep at night?
May you be free of suffering and the causes of suffering.
Chris
There is also the SI joint at that location. I have had similar issues and also told it could be bursa related or SI joint.
Thank you for your thoughtful response. The pain feels a bit like what I would feel if I were sore after exercise, but it does depend on whether I exercise and does not hurt more if I walk (in fact I feel it a bit less). I don't believe I have fallen or over sued the area, but I am 51 so maybe I have to get use to overuse meaning something different now than it used to. the Pain does hang on in the same area and It does not interfere with my sleep, but in the morning I feel stuck (this is what I mean with stiff). It seems to worsen with lack of movement over night. I have not done anything about it, but I should. Thanks, Simona
I think I’m between you and Chris. I have had pretty intense pain on the outer/upper side of my right butt now for about 2 months. That is totally different from my decades-long Sciatica pain. Close, but further out, and not radiating. Because of breast cancer issues I was worried about bone metastasis, but x-ray shows all is good. so, yes, I am sure it is an inflamed bursa. Very uncomfortable, and some days I am almost tempted to have a cortisone shot, and/or take pain pills. So far - nope. Exercise seems to help, so does swimming. And applying ice/heat, which I don’t do enough of. But it sure is really not good when you start your morning needing to sit on the toilet seat, and your bursitis won’t let you sit. That it hurts too much to be lowered at that squatting position.
Hi I’m Lisa and I want to let you know it could be sacroilitis/sI joint dysfunction My pain was so severe that when sitting I used to make a fist and put under area when I sat or drove the pressure seemed to help. Seemed like nobody really knew what it was until I went to ortho for my trochanteric bursitis and explained what I was experiencing. Since then I get SI joint injections and this is the only relief. Good Luck
I had this off and on for years and would go get the shot and a chiropractic adjustment. However, one Dr refused the shot, which I got once a year about this time (cold weather?) and sent me for images and a referral. I ended up at PT and learned about Piriformis Syndrome. Regular stretching of that muscle, hamstrings and strengthening glutes was just the thing. Sleep with a pillow between your legs, or on your back with pillows under knees. Dr Jo has similar online stretches, but I recommend going to a PT who specializes in piriformis, hypermobility, Ehlers-Danlose. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqQDmakOvN8 as well as Bob and Brad, who explain it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEqRoCJ6UAY I periodically use CBD ointment, lidocaine patches, ice/heat, magnesium, etc. A daily walk helps, too.
I had hip replacement surgery in Oct. 2020. About 3 months later I began having deep pain in that same hip. After discussing with my orthopedic surgeon, he felt it was bursitis in my hip. Bursitis can be very painful. I did use ice when going to bed which helped. May not be your issue but wanted to mention. Good luck!
Hi there @m1416. I can't believe this.....we are walking down the same path here. I thought for sure I was going to have to have a hip replacement. My surgeon for my recent TKR took some images and told me it was bursitis in only one of the five bursa sacs around the hip. An injection of cortisone lasts about 10-12 months. It is unlikely that I will need surgery to remove them.
Thanks for posting. And good luck to you.
I have had two hip surgeries but this may not be related . I have had pain in my right upper buttock and I felt very stiff and hobble when I first stand up to walk . I ended up going to PT after my X-rays etc did not reveal anything . I think it was just muscular and I had some weakness from sitting so much . The exercises loosened up my hips and I also strengthened the whole area . Hope this helps .
S/I Joint Pain the new thing or what. Thats what I'm trying to understand myself. I felt a pain it my right back waist one day and then it became worse. I went to the doctors and then the x-ray and then the MRI and of it must be the SI joint. Ok, so what do we do. Steroid Injections no good, explanation joint is too big medicine just diffuses, so next the / RFA (Radio Frequency Ablation (ouch) and No Good. Explanation many nerves and probable other low back spine associated nerves and injury. More S/I injections, now a few more lumbar spine injections, how's it going, are we having fun yet. lol. Sometimes I think I am getting worse form all the jabbing and injections. Not to mention the medications, So many, so little notable effectiveness and keeping track of what to take when. What do I do? Stop and never have a quality life. Living hell. Keep getting more of the same and hoping and failing. The emotional and physical roller coaster is not good. Hanging in there wherever there is nowadays.
