High platelet count: What does this mean?
My son, who is 46, has an elevated platelet count of 700,000 to 870,000. It has went on for over four years and is only being monitored. Is there more testing other than blood tests that can be done? What are the concerns a person should have with this elevated count?

I have a high count of 750 with JAK ET currently on Hydroxyurea for a month now. Along with Ondansetron for sickness. Get blood work again in a week. Hope they come down.
How were the results of your blood work, Anonymo? Did the values come down?
Not seeing any research on Elevated platelet counts preindicators for Cancer I can verify this one myself I kept seeing research being done in other countries but not here? It looks to be very promising.
Good morning @toepeekun. Mild to moderately elevated platelet counts are commonly seen when chronic inflammation is present. In other cases a high platelet count can signal a more serious blood problem known as a myeloproliferative disorder.
It sounds like you’re familiar with this. Have you been diagnosed with thrombocytosis or myeloproliferative neoplasm? Are you in treatment at this time?
Had surgery invasive breast cancer going into treatment just trying to educate myself looking through my own lab work
Hey @toepeekun, you might notice that I moved your post to a discussion talking about high platelet counts so you can bond with other members going through similar situations.
What treatment are you entering?
Oh golly, I’m sorry about your cancer diagnosis. That’s always earth shattering isn’t it? But education is power so I know you want to find out as much as you can. If you’re having chemo treatments, that can affect your blood counts, including your platelet levels. They can be very erratic during treatment.
Looking through results of lab work, if you’re not familiar with all the terms and what each number represents, can be a little bewildering. From experience, I know it’s easy to go off searching for possible answers. But we can also misinterpret things too, Have you discussed your blood work with your oncologist?
Do you have any specific numbers you’re seeing that you want to know more about? You mentioned platelets. Are your counts elevated?
I had thrombocytopenia with a very low platelet count (opposite of low is high (thrombocythaemia). For me, I was making plenty of platelets, but my spleen was killing them. I had to have a splenectomy at 28. Now 30 yrs. later I am in the 5 - 700 area and my Oncologist is not concerned, even though I had a splenectomy and a Liver transplant. For some it becomes a norm, for others be on top of your blood work and get to know what each of them mean and how they affect your body. Do you have other abnormal results? Any symptoms?
I've dealt with a CALR mutation for 2.5 yrs, have (seasonal) 2 Hematologists, tried to remain a 500mg Hydroxy daily but platelets have exceeded 1 million a couple times so I've been on 1,000, losing hair! I'm currently in the 500's. I've had an ablation last year so I'm on lo dose and a blood thinner, I'm worried about a brain bleed? 74, thin, exercise over an hour daily.
Some people and acquaintances were saying a high white blood count of 92000 - 105000 shows you could have a stronger immune system which is much different than a very low white blood count; how can this be true? EAM
